Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

This is the card to get if you fly Southwest multiple times per year. The $149 annual fee is offset immediately by a $75 Southwest travel credit, and the four upgraded boardings (in the A1–A15 group) can easily cover the rest. Add in 7,500 anniversary points and an annual 10,000-point Companion Pass boost, and you’re well on your way to earning one of the most valuable perks in domestic travel. If Southwest is your airline of choice—even just a few times per year—this card delivers consistent, real-world value.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Card offers the same 50,000-point sign-up bonus as the other two personal cards, but its added benefits make it the top choice for regular Southwest travelers. While its $149 annual fee is the highest of the three, it delivers the most value in return.

  • $75 Southwest travel credit: Cuts the effective annual fee nearly in half.
  • 4 upgraded boardings per year: A minimum $120 value if used strategically.
  • Companion Pass boost: Receive 10,000 bonus points each calendar year to help you earn the pass faster.

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

This card may not be the right fit if you rarely fly Southwest, so the perks won’t offset the annual fee. Or you’ve earned a Southwest personal card sign-up bonus within the last 24 months and are ineligible for another until that window resets.

What to Know About Southwest Rapid Rewards

Southwest airlines carries the most passengers in North America.

  • Their points are among the easiest to earn, plus they have solid value.
  • They’re partnered with Chase Ultimate Rewards, our favorite point partner ecosystem.
  • Southwest’s boarding is polarizing (though it is updating to reserved seating in early 2026)
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards aren’t the most glamorous, but they’re the utility points that just work.

How The Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card Fits In The Southwest Rapid Rewards Ecosystem

This is the most benefit-rich of the three personal Southwest credit cards, and its $149 annual fee reflects that. Here's how it stacks up:

  • More perks: The Priority card is the only one with a $75 annual travel credit and four upgraded boardings (worth $120+), while the Premier and Plus cards offer only two EarlyBird Check-Ins.
  • Higher anniversary points: 7,500 on the Priority card vs. 6,000 on Premier and 3,000 on Plus.
  • TQP-earning potential: The Priority and Premier cards let you earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) for every $5,000 spent—great if you're aiming for A-List status.
Beyond those differences, all three personal cards share similar base benefits. The right one for you depends on how often you fly Southwest and which perks matter most.

If you’re aiming for the Companion Pass, you’ll also want to look into Southwest’s business card options. The Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Card gives you the best shot at earning the pass through sign-up bonuses alone, thanks to its 80,000-point bonus on $5,000 in spending. The Premier Business card offers 60,000 points with a lower $3,000 spend.

My Experience, No Filter

I’ll admit it — Southwest isn’t my favorite airline when it comes to the in-flight experience. The boarding process can be stressful, and the lack of seat assignments isn’t ideal. But the points? Incredibly easy to earn and redeem. And with no change fees or blackout dates, Southwest makes it easy to book, cancel, or adjust plans as needed. That flexibility has made a big difference for me. I’ve used points to fly family in for Holiday visits, sent my kids to visit friends across the country, and booked spontaneous weekend getaways — all without spending cash. I may not love the flight itself, but I love what the points allow me to do.
