The Capital One VentureOne Rewards card may look appealing as a no-annual-fee travel card, but it’s not a smart long-term pick for those serious about points and miles.

Capital One VentureOne Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

If you're planning to stay in the points and miles hobby long term, the VentureOne isn’t worth occupying one of your 5/24 slots. Its modest 20,000-mile sign-up bonus and underwhelming benefits don’t compare to what you’d get with the Venture or Venture X cards. If you're considering a Capital One card, skip this entry-level option and go with one that actually builds value.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

It’s tough to justify choosing the VentureOne card when Capital One’s higher-tier cards offer significantly better rewards and benefits. Still, if you’re extremely fee-averse and just testing the waters:

  • Earn 20,000 Capital One miles after spending only $500 in the first 3 months
  • 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 1.25x miles on all other purchases
  • No annual fee

Capital One has offered 40,000-mile bonuses on this card in the past, which is better — but even then, we think the Venture or Venture X cards are far superior options.

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

This card may not be a good fit if:

  • You’re looking for strong benefits and travel perks—there simply aren’t any here
  • You want to maximize value from your 5/24 slots (and you should) — this card doesn’t deliver the long-term value that others do
  • You’d prefer better-earning multipliers and a more worthwhile sign-up bonus, even with an annual fee

What to Know About Capital One Miles

Capital One is a flexible point system we use for travel items that other systems don't cover
  • Car Rentals, cruises, and vacation home rentals top our list of uses for Capital One Miles
  • Partner transfers are niche airlines and hotel brands, making the points less attractive
  • Point redemptions are so similar to cash that they can be less satisfying for the hobbyist
  • Capital One is particularly attractive to businesses with large spends

How The Capital One VentureOne Credit Card Fits In The Capital One Miles Ecosystem

The VentureOne is Capital One’s entry-level travel card, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of long-term benefits.

  • Its 20,000-mile sign-up bonus pales in comparison to the 75,000-mile offers on the Venture and Venture X
  • VentureOne earns just 1.25x miles on everyday purchases (compared to 2x on the Venture and Venture X)
  • The Capital One SavorOne card offers better multipliers on everyday categories and can transfer rewards to a Venture card
  • The Venture ($95 annual fee) and Venture X ($395 annual fee) offer premium benefits like travel credits, lounge access, and better travel protections—making them well worth it for travelers
If you’re new to the hobby, don’t be intimidated by annual fees. You’ll quickly find that cards with annual fees often come with outsized value, while cards like the VentureOne end up being missed opportunities.

My Experience, No Filter

I got this card almost entirely for an at-the-time inflated sign-up bonus. I do love the ease of spending the points on canceling a travel expense via the "Points Eraser" benefit. But, again, I really fell in love with the Venture X card —much better for people fixated on traveling.
