Key Takeaways
High fees and inflated partner pricing reduce Qantas points appeal.
- Best value is typically on domestic Australian flights or select short-haul Oneworld routes.
- Points pricing is distance-based, and business class awards are generally expensive, especially to/from the U.S.
- Booking American Airlines or British Airways flights often comes with massive fuel surcharges.
- Transfers from Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt are available, but Qantas is rarely the best use of those points.

Associated Alliances
Qantas Frequent Flyer associated alliance is oneworld Alliance
Visit oneworld AllianceHow to Earn Miles
You can earn Qantas points by flying on Qantas, any oneworld partner, or one of their many non-alliance partners. How many points you earn depends on your fare class and flight distance. Qantas does not offer a co-branded credit card for U.S. customers, but it partners with several major transferable points programs.
Earn by Flying Qantas
Qantas awards points using an earning table based on ticket type and cabin class. Your earnings depend on the miles flown. You can:
- Use Qantas’ earning tables to see accrual by fare class
- Use their mileage calculator to check earnings for any specific route
Earn by Opening Transferable Points Cards
Qantas partners with several major transferable programs:
- American Express – transfers 1:1
- Capital One – transfers 1:1
- Citi – transfers 1:1
These programs have other airline partners that usually offer better value, so we only recommend transferring to Qantas when you have a specific redemption in mind.
Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance)
You can also earn Qantas points by flying on partners. Qantas uses a regional earning chart that applies across all partner airlines. You can:
- Check the partner earning table for accrual rates
- Use the Qantas earnings calculator to verify how many points you’ll earn for any flight

How to Redeem Miles
Your best use of Qantas miles is to redeem them for airfare on Qantas or one of its many partners. Qantas uses a distance based award chart for all redemptions. The best value comes from Classic Flight Rewards, which apply to Qantas, Jetstar, Fiji Airways, Air Vanuatu, and American Airlines. They also offer Classic Flight Rewards for partners, but those charts usually have higher redemption rates.
Classic Flight Rewards are limited. After those seats are gone, award pricing becomes dynamic, and those redemptions are rarely worth it. If you plan to redeem miles on Qantas, note that the airline releases award space 353 days in advance. Partner programs get access to that same space 22 days later, giving you an early booking advantage. Classic rewards book quickly, especially on premium routes.
You can search for reward flights directly on the Qantas website. Enter your trip details, then toggle the “Rewards” button. Results will highlight Classic rewards and any partner award availability.

Booking Tips
If you plan to redeem on Qantas, be aware that they hefty surcharges on long-haul flights on their own metal, particularly in premium cabins
If you want to fly a premium class of service on Qantas, book early as they release their own award space 22 days before they release it to partners (353 days in advance vs. 331 days)
The redemption is almost always bad, so you’re better off just using all points or all cash for your booking
Changing your flight with Qantas Frequent Flyer
- 5000 point fee per passenger to change a reward booking on Qantas
- You will be subject to a fare increase if there is one
Canceling your flight with Qantas Frequent Flyer
- 6000 point fee per passenger to cancel a reward booking on Qantas
Who is it best for?
If you’re based in Australia, Qantas is a reasonable program to join. For U.S. residents, though, it ranks fairly low on the list of programs we’d pay attention to. There are no co-branded credit cards to earn points with, and while you can transfer points from American Express, Capital One, and Citi, all three systems have more valuable transfer partners than Qantas.
Qantas is part of the oneworld Alliance, so they have strong partners to redeem points with. But you can usually find better award pricing directly through those partners or through other airline programs. Availability for premium cabins on Qantas metal can be easier to find through Qantas, but surcharges can be high, which limits the overall value.
