Key Takeaways

High fees and inflated partner pricing reduce Qantas points appeal.

  • Best value is typically on domestic Australian flights or select short-haul Oneworld routes.
  • Points pricing is distance-based, and business class awards are generally expensive, especially to/from the U.S.
  • Booking American Airlines or British Airways flights often comes with massive fuel surcharges.
  • Transfers from Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt are available, but Qantas is rarely the best use of those points.

How to Earn Miles

You can earn Qantas points by flying on Qantas, any oneworld partner, or one of their many non-alliance partners. How many points you earn depends on your fare class and flight distance. Qantas does not offer a co-branded credit card for U.S. customers, but it partners with several major transferable points programs.

Earn by Flying Qantas

Qantas awards points using an earning table based on ticket type and cabin class. Your earnings depend on the miles flown. You can:

Earn by Opening Transferable Points Cards

Qantas partners with several major transferable programs:

These programs have other airline partners that usually offer better value, so we only recommend transferring to Qantas when you have a specific redemption in mind.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance)

You can also earn Qantas points by flying on partners. Qantas uses a regional earning chart that applies across all partner airlines. You can:

Other Options to Earn

You can earn Qantas points through everyday spending with a wide range of partners across several categories. These options aren’t high value, though, and without a co-branded credit card in the U.S., they aren’t an efficient way to build Qantas points. You’re usually better off earning rewards in another program for your daily spending. Click here to learn more about all other earning options.

How to Redeem Miles

Your best use of Qantas miles is to redeem them for airfare on Qantas or one of its many partners. Qantas uses a distance based award chart for all redemptions. The best value comes from Classic Flight Rewards, which apply to Qantas, Jetstar, Fiji Airways, Air Vanuatu, and American Airlines. They also offer Classic Flight Rewards for partners, but those charts usually have higher redemption rates.

Classic Flight Rewards are limited. After those seats are gone, award pricing becomes dynamic, and those redemptions are rarely worth it. If you plan to redeem miles on Qantas, note that the airline releases award space 353 days in advance. Partner programs get access to that same space 22 days later, giving you an early booking advantage. Classic rewards book quickly, especially on premium routes.

You can search for reward flights directly on the Qantas website. Enter your trip details, then toggle the “Rewards” button. Results will highlight Classic rewards and any partner award availability.

Booking Tips

These are the best value reward seats bookable through Qantas, but these availability has decreased substantially in recent years

Changing your flight with Qantas Frequent Flyer

  • 5000 point fee per passenger to change a reward booking on Qantas
  • You will be subject to a fare increase if there is one

Canceling your flight with Qantas Frequent Flyer

  • 6000 point fee per passenger to cancel a reward booking on Qantas

Who is it best for?

If you’re based in Australia, Qantas is a reasonable program to join. For U.S. residents, though, it ranks fairly low on the list of programs we’d pay attention to. There are no co-branded credit cards to earn points with, and while you can transfer points from American Express, Capital One, and Citi, all three systems have more valuable transfer partners than Qantas.

Qantas is part of the oneworld Alliance, so they have strong partners to redeem points with. But you can usually find better award pricing directly through those partners or through other airline programs. Availability for premium cabins on Qantas metal can be easier to find through Qantas, but surcharges can be high, which limits the overall value.

Status Levels Explained

Qantas has five tiers of elite status. Bronze is the entry level and is earned simply by signing up. This tier allows you to earn and redeem points. To reach the next four levels, you must earn Status Credits. You can earn Status Credits on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member, and partner airline flights. You’ll enjoy the benefits of each tier from the moment you qualify through the end of the next full Membership year.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the four other levels, requirements you’ll need to get to each level, and the benefits of each

  • 50% Earn Status bonus points with Qantas, Jetstar, and American
  • Priority phone service
  • Preferred seating
  • Complimentary seating
  • Priority check-in at business counters (where available)
  • Priority waitlist/airport standby
  • Additional checked baggage allowance
  • Chip-enabled Qantas card
  • Complimentary Qantas luggage tag
  • One complimentary lounge invitation
  • Put status on hold for up to 18 months

FAQs

Can I transfer Qantas points to American Airlines?
No. You cannot transfer points between airline programs. You can only use Qantas points through Qantas' reward system. Since Qantas partners with American Airlines, though, you can redeem Qantas points to book flights on American when saver award space is available.
Is it free to be a Qantas Frequent Flyer?
Yes. It’s free to join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, which lets you earn and redeem points. To move up in status, you must earn Status Credits by flying on Qantas, Jetstar, or partner airlines within your membership year.
How many miles do I need for a free flight?
The lowest redemption is 5,700 points for a Jetstar flight under 600 miles. The cheapest Qantas redemption is 9,200 points, which also applies to Fiji, Emirates, and American Airlines. For all other partners, the lowest redemption is 11,500 points.
