Take Control of Your Annual Fees

Justifying a high annual fee when you earn a big signup bonus is easy. Even if you don't use any of the card's benefits or extras, a strong welcome offer can offset even the most expensive cards. But once that second year rolls around and the annual fee hits again, the decision becomes less clear.

How do you determine if the annual fee is worth paying another year? Should you cancel the card? If so, when is the right time? Can you downgrade the card instead? What are your options?

The Renewal Analyzer helps you answer those questions. We've mapped out the benefits and extras tied to each card, and you can assign your own values to each one. From there, you can clearly see what each card is worth to you, taking the guesswork out of the decision.

If you're getting enough value, keep the card. If not, it may be time to downgrade or cancel.

Keep, Downgrade, or Cancel?

How do I renew a credit card?

Renewing a credit card is simple. You pay the annual fee, and the card remains open for another year. The key question is whether that fee is worth it.

The Renewal Analyzer helps you answer that. You can assign values to each benefit and extra tied to your card, making it easy to see if the total value offsets the annual fee. If it does, keep the card. If not, it may be time to reconsider. Since your situation can change year to year, you can repeat this process annually to stay on track.

How do I downgrade a credit card?

Downgrading a card is more complex and depends on several factors. What card do you have? What bank issues it? Do they offer downgrade options? Will downgrading affect your ability to earn a future welcome offer on that card?

Timing and eligibility both matter. If you decide downgrading is the best option, we'll show you the best available paths so you can make the most informed decision.

How do I cancel a credit card?

Canceling a card is usually straightforward. If you decide the annual fee is no longer worth it, most banks allow you to cancel within 30 days of the fee posting and still receive a refund.

Avoid canceling before the first 12 months. Banks can claw back your signup bonus or other benefits if you close the account too early. The safest approach is to wait for the annual fee to post, then decide whether to keep or cancel.

There's a common myth that canceling cards will hurt your credit. In most cases, it won't have a meaningful impact, especially if you continue paying balances in full and managing your accounts responsibly. When available, downgrading to a no-annual-fee card can be a good alternative, since it keeps your account open and maintains your relationship with the bank. But sometimes that's not an option, and if that's the case, it's not a big deal to cancel the card.
