Deep Dive into the Hyatt 1/24 Rule

Hyatt's card offerings and rules are pretty simple. For the purpose of these rules, the newer World of Hyatt card (which was updated and rebranded in 2019 from The Hyatt Credit Card) is considered the same as the old card. But since it's been so long, the 24 month timer has run out on the old Hyatt card. So if you had that one previously, you are able to get the newer one and should be eligible for the signup bonus.

But if you've had either the personal World of Hyatt card or the World of Hyatt Business card, you are not eligible to receive the welcome offer if you've received it in the previous 24 months. Note this is 24 months from the date of the statement on which you receive your bonus, not the application date. To be safe, we recommend waiting until the first day of the next month after these 24 months. So basically, a safe easy estimate is 28 months from the time you got your last Hyatt card. The Point Navigator estimates your bonus date as 3 months from sign-up. You can update your actual date by looking at your statements and adjusting on the "My Cards" page.

This is one of those rules that is actually in the terms and conditions for the card. Many of the card rules we discuss are unwritten ones. This one is black and white. Below is a screenshot from Chase’s site regarding the World of Hyatt credit card.

There are two World of Hyatt credit cards currently available - a personal card and a business card. This rule applies to both cards. Fortunately, you are able to hold both cards at the same time and be eligible for the signup bonus on each. If you wanted to get each card again and be eligible for the welcome offer, though, you would have to wait 24 months from receiving the bonus AND close the card.

Example

Timeline:

  • July 2022: Approved for World of Hyatt personal credit card
  • September 2022: Approved for World of Hyatt Business card
  • October 2022: Received signup bonus for World of Hyatt personal card
  • December 2022: Received signup bonus for World of Hyatt Business card

Important to know:

In the above scenario, you would be eligible to apply for and receive the signup bonus on the personal card in November 2024 since that is when you received the signup bonus (remember it's the first day of the month AFTER you received the signup bonus). You would also have to close the card before applying for a new one. If the card is still open, you would not be eligible. For the business card, you would be eligible to get a new card and receive the welcome offer in January 2025 because you received the signup bonus in December 2022. Just like the personal card, you would have to close the first business card before applying to be eligible AND wait until the first day of the month following when you received the bonus.

How Does This Affect Your Credit Card Strategy?

Fortunately this shouldn’t impact your card strategy too much. When you start applying for co-branded hotel cards like the World of Hyatt card, that most likely means you aren’t at the beginning of your points and miles journey. We almost always recommend starting by getting cards that offer flexible rewards. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred, the American Express Gold or Platinum, or the Capital One Venture Rewards or Venture X. All these cards offer the flexibility of transferring the points you earn to one of their airline or hotel partners.

Important to know:

The World of Hyatt card only earns points that can be redeemed with Hyatt, same with the business version of the card. When you start in the points and miles hobby, you generally want to build up as many flexible points as you can before moving on to more restrictive points earned with co-branded hotel and airline cards.

Because of this strategy, it shouldn’t be a big deal to wait out those 24 months between cards and bonuses, especially since you can hold both the personal and business cards at once. Provided you have a Chase card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which you should, you’ll already have points that can be transferred to Hyatt if you ever need a top off. This makes it so you shouldn’t need a new Hyatt card within a 2 year period. So while this rule is good to know and be aware of, it’s not going to be a major factor that will impact your decision making.

Importance of this Rule

* *

Since this rule only impacts two credit cards, co-branded hotel cards at that, it isn’t a very important one. Once you get to the point of applying for hotel specific cards like either of the World of Hyatt ones, you should have a nice collection of points across different systems. You get a card like World of Hyatt either because you’re loyal to the brand and stay at their hotels often, or you have a trip coming up where you’ll be staying at one of their hotels. In either case, you’ll get a nice collection of signup bonus points to use initially. You’ll also earn ongoing benefits and perks that make it worth keeping either card in your wallet until you’re eligible to cancel the card and reapply, earning another signup bonus and keeping those same benefits.

FAQs

Are there exceptions to this rule?

No, you cannot open another World of Hyatt card and earn the bonus before waiting 24 months and closing the card. There’s no way around it.

How do I check my status?

Provided you load all your cards into the Points Navigator, we’ll let you know when that 24 months wait is up and you’ll be eligible to get a new World of Hyatt card and the signup bonus that comes with it.

If you don’t use our site, we always recommend keeping track of all the cards you get, when you were approved, earned the signup bonus, and when any annual fees might be due. The more cards you get, the harder it is to keep track of, so you might as well let us do it for you.

Do business cards count for this rule?

Yes, there is both a World of Hyatt personal card and World of Hyatt Business card, and they both have the same 24 months from bonus rule. The good news is that you can hold both the personal and business versions of the card at once and earn the signup bonus on each.

Do product changes on existing cards count for this rule?

There is no way to downgrade either of these cards as they’re the only ones that are currently offered. You’ll have to close them if you don’t want them anymore.

About Approval Rules

Collecting credit card points is largely driven by understanding and abiding by bank rules regarding approval (or disapproval) of cards. So here's what you need to know:

  • Approval rules are rarely fully publicized by the banks
  • We use our own research and data points from other users in creating the rules listing
  • Our goal in sharing/using the rule listings is to provide you guidance to avoid getting declined
  • There can sometimes be exceptions to the rules, but we try to take a more cautious approach in advising you.
