One Sentence Summary

You can only get one Discover card every 12 months

Deep Dive into the Discover 1/12 Rule

This is a simple rule that doesn’t need much further explanation. You are only allowed one Discover card every year. There is also a separate rule stating that you are only allowed to hold two Discover cards at once. So if you have one, you must wait 12 months to apply for another. If you have two, you have to cancel one and wait 12 months from your last approval before applying for another.

How Does This Affect Your Credit Card Strategy?

We don’t see any reason why you should ever waste a 5/24 spot with any Discover card, so this rule should never impact you. All Discover cards are very far down our list of recommended cards.

Importance of this Rule

*

If we could give 0 stars we would. This rule should never come into play as we don’t recommend getting any Discover cards, much less two in less than a year.
