Approval Rules Citi 1/8

You'll be declined if you apply for a second Citi card (business and/or personal) within 8 days

You'll be declined if you apply for a second Citi card (business and/or personal) within 8 days

Deep Dive into the Citi 1/8 Rule

You'll be declined if you apply for a second Citi card within 8 days. This rule rarely gets flagged. But if you have a business -- and decide to apply for a personal card and a business card at the same time -- this rule could trip you up.

Important to know:

You should also be aware of another Citi rule regarding business cards. The Citi 1/95 Rule says that you cannot get a second business card within 95 days of the first. So if you get a Citi business card first and want to get a second Citi card, you’re only allowed to get a personal one (and only after 8 days).

How Does This Affect Your Credit Card Strategy?

This one specific rule shouldn't impact your card strategy much, if at all. It’s more important to consider all of Citi’s rules together when deciding on which Citi cards to get, in what order to get them, and how much to space them out.

Important to know:

For the sake of this rule, just know that you can’t apply for two cards at the same time or within eight days of each other. If you do apply for a second card quickly (but beyond the eight days), then be aware of the following rules:

  • You can’t apply for a third card until 65 days have passed (the 2/65 rule)
  • If one of the cards you apply for first is a business card, you can’t apply for a second business card until 95 days have passed (the 1/95 rule)
  • There are six Citi cards that have the 48 From Bonus rule, which states that you cannot get a signup bonus on a card if you have had one on that same card within the last 48 months.

Importance of this Rule

*

There shouldn’t be a situation where you feel you must get two cards within eight days. If you know you have a big purchase coming up and will meet the signup bonus spending requirement on a card immediately, just know that instead of applying for two cards at once (or within a couple days of each other), you just have to wait eight days (when it comes to Citi cards).
