Approval Rules Cap One Venture Family

If you have received a signup bonus from a higher tiered card, you are ineligible to receive a bonus from a lower tiered card in that same card family.

If you have received a signup bonus from a higher tiered card, you are ineligible to receive a bonus from a lower tiered card in that same card family.

Deep Dive into the Cap One Venture Family Rule

Capital One offers three Venture cards to customers, and you can only earn a signup bonus on each card once every 48 months. This new rule further restricts your ability to earn welcome offers, stating that you also have to get the cards in a certain order to be able to earn the signup bonus on each. This is exactly like American Express’ Family Rule. If you get the cards in the wrong order, you will be ineligible to receive signup bonuses on each card.

Here is the language for the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card:

Important to know:

This rule only affects three cards:

You must apply for the cards in the above order if you want to earn the signup bonus on each. If you apply for the Venture X card first, you will be ineligible to receive the signup bonus on the VentureOne and Venture Rewards cards.

How Does This Affect Your Credit Card Strategy?

Once you know and understand this rule, you just have to apply for these cards in the correct order, provided you want to earn the signup bonus on each. Capital One is one of the strictest banks when it comes to approvals, and you can’t churn through cards as easily as with other systems, so it’s important to spread out your applications and have a clear strategy.

You need to know this rule along with another Capital One rule - the 1/6 Rule. This states you may not be approved for a second Capital One card if you’ve opened one in the past six months. So it’s also important to combine that rule with this Family Rule when mapping out your Capital One strategy.

Important to know:

This Family Rule only impacts three cards, and you may not even want the lowest card, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards card. The standard welcome offer on that one is 20,000 points, and while you only have to spend $500 on it to earn the bonus, the lack of other tangible benefits might not make it worth a spot on your 5/24 list. Only you can decide that.

If you do want that card, though, apply for it first, then the Capital One Venture Rewards, then the Capital One Venture X.

Importance of this Rule

* * *

We rank the Capital One ecosystem below Citi, Chase, and Amex when it comes to transferable currency. While Capital One cards have good potential, they are not the driver of our overall card strategy. But this is an important rule to be aware of. Both the Venture Rewards and Venture X have pretty good welcome offers (standard offers are 75k on each) and are both cards you may want to keep in your wallet long term. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the SUB for the Venture Rewards simply because you signed up for the Venture X first. Add to it that you can only earn a signup bonus on each of the three cards every 48 months, and this rule becomes even more important to know.

FAQs

Are there exceptions to this rule?

It only affects three cards in the Capital One arsenal of cards, so you don’t need to worry about this for any other card. There are also 48 month restrictions on all three of these cards, making it even more restrictive. You have to get these cards in a specific order to receive the bonus on each, and then you are ineligible from getting the card again and receiving a welcome offer until 48 months have passed. The two other Capital One cards that have 48 From Bonus restrictions do not have these same family rules.

How do I check my status?

If you sign up and load all your cards into the Points Navigator, we will keep track of all these pesky rules for you. Once you are into the hobby and have collected multiple cards from multiple points systems, it’s difficult to keep track of everything. Let us do it for you! We can track all these rules, your annual fees, and every benefits and perk you earn from each of your cards.

Do business cards count for this rule?

No, none of the Capital One business cards have this same rule.

Do product changes on existing cards count for this rule?

You don’t generally receive a signup bonus when you product change a card, so no, this will not have an impact. The rule clearly states that you are not eligible “if you have received a new cardmember bonus” for any of the affected cards.

About Approval Rules

Collecting credit card points is largely driven by understanding and abiding by bank rules regarding approval (or disapproval) of cards. So here's what you need to know:

  • Approval rules are rarely fully publicized by the banks
  • We use our own research and data points from other users in creating the rules listing
  • Our goal in sharing/using the rule listings is to provide you guidance to avoid getting declined
  • There can sometimes be exceptions to the rules, but we try to take a more cautious approach in advising you.
