Marriott Bonvoy Business Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

The Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card is Marriott’s only business credit card. If you qualify for a business card or don’t want to use up a 5/24 spot, it’s worth considering for the welcome offer alone. The current elevated offer is 150,000 points plus a $125 statement credit.

Long term, though, we’re less convinced the $125 annual fee is worthwhile for most travelers. The card’s main ongoing perk is an annual free night certificate capped at 35,000 points, which doesn’t go especially far within the Marriott ecosystem. You can top up that certificate with another 25,000 points though. You’ll also receive complimentary Gold Elite status, but the benefits are fairly limited compared to Marriott Platinum Elite status.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

You receive 150,000 points plus a $125 statement credit as a sign-up bonus after spending $6,000 (currently $8,000) in the first 6 months. Beyond that, the benefits aren’t strong, although the $125 annual fee is relatively modest. Because it’s a business card, if you’re up against your 5/24 limit and really want a Marriott co-branded option, this one could be worthwhile for the bonus. Just remember the American Express 1/7 Rule, which allows you to earn the welcome bonus only once every seven years.

Whether you keep this card longer depends on how much you value the annual free night (capped at 35,000 points) and the complimentary Gold Elite Status. You are allowed to top up any free night award with up to 25,000 additional Maririott points. Beyond those perks, the benefits are fairly weak.

  • 15 Elite Night credits toward Platinum Status (50 nights required)
  • 4X points on restaurants, gas stations, and wireless services
  • 2X points on everything else
  • 7% discount on eligible Marriott bookings
  • Up to 18.5X points on Marriott purchases.

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

Here are some exceptions where the card might not be good for you:

  • The benefits beyond the welcome offer aren’t very strong, and several other Marriott cards offer similar or better perks at a lower annual fee.
  • If you’re seeking higher-status perks and regularly stay at Marriott properties, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card is likely a better choice.

What to Know About Marriott Bonvoy

Their poor points redemption value leaves Bonvoy near the bottom of our rankings.

  • There are multiple cards with great point transfer options. In theory, this is good.
  • Finding a solid value for a Marriott stay is a challenge. A one night stay at desirable destinations can match the number of points from one card bonus.
  • Values can be found, but they can be frustrating to find, so it isn’t a terrible system. It just doesn’t have the usefulness of many of the other hotel systems.

How The Marriott Bonvoy Business Credit Card Fits In The Marriott Bonvoy Ecosystem

The Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card is Marriott’s only co-branded business card. If you want a Marriott business card or you’ve reached your 5/24 limit for personal cards, this is your only option. Before applying, make sure you understand Marriott’s complicated 24-month rules, which can restrict eligibility for welcome bonuses based on your Bonvoy card history.

If you can apply for a personal card instead, Marriott offers five additional options:

  • Bonvoy Bountiful (Chase) and Bonvoy Bevy (Amex): Both carry a $250 annual fee and offer a 85,000 point bonus. We generally do not recommend either because they lack an automatic annual free night certificate. You can earn one after $15,000 in annual spending, but we don’t think that’s worthwhile for most users.
  • Bonvoy Boundless: $95 annual fee, three free nights (up to 50,000 points each) as the welcome offer, plus an annual free night worth up to 35,000 points. While Marriott points are less valuable than some competitors’, the annual certificate can still offset the annual fee for many travelers.
  • Bonvoy Bold: No annual fee, but only a 30,000 point bonus and very limited ongoing perks.
  • Bonvoy Brilliant: Marriott’s premium card with a $650 annual fee, complimentary Platinum Elite status, an annual free night worth up to 85,000 points, a variety of statement credits, and a 100,000 point bonus.

For most travelers, the Boundless and Brilliant cards provide the strongest long-term value within the Marriott ecosystem, while the business card mainly stands out because it avoids 5/24 and offers access to a decent welcome bonus. Also keep in mind that the Amex-backed Marriott cards are subject to the Amex 1/7 Rule. Because you generally cannot earn another welcome offer on the same card for at least seven years, it may be worth waiting for an elevated offer before applying.
