Booking Tips For This Reward Program

Know the difference between Avios partners
QSuites pricing and booking
Avoid These Pitfalls

Key Takeaways

Qatar now uses Avios, which makes it flexible — but not always cheap.

  • QSuites redemptions (especially U.S. to Doha) can offer solid value, particularly during transfer bonuses.
  • However, Qatar charges high surcharges, sometimes adding $500+ to business class redemptions.
  • Award pricing is segment-based, which makes long itineraries expensive.
  • Transfers from Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt, with near-instant transfer speeds.
  • Not bad for one-off premium redemptions, but fees and pricing structure limit day-to-day usefulness.

How to Earn Miles

Qatar is one of seven airlines that uses Avios as its currency, making it a flexible program since you can transfer Avios freely between all seven. Qatar is also part of the oneworld Alliance, so you can earn Avios when flying on Qatar Airways or any oneworld partner. They also partner with several non-oneworld airlines. Qatar only has two co-branded credit cards, but they do have strong transfer partners.

Earn by Flying Qatar

The amount of Avios you earn when flying Qatar Airways depends on your booking class and whether you hold elite status. You can view Qatar’s earning chart or use their online calculator to check specific routes.

Earn by Opening Co-Branded Credit Cards

Qatar offers two co-branded credit cards that earn Avios. Since Avios transfer freely between all seven participating airlines, any co-branded Avios card from another airline can also fuel your Qatar balance.

Earn by Opening Transferable Miles Cards

  • Bilt, Amex, Capital One, and Citi all transfer to Qatar at 1:1 ratios.
  • Even though Chase is not a direct Qatar partner, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Aer Lingus, British Airways, or Iberia and then transfer those Avios to Qatar.
  • This flexibility gives Qatar one of the strongest earning ecosystems among Avios programs.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

Qatar is part of the oneworld Alliance, and you can earn Avios by flying on any oneworld airline. They also partner with several non-oneworld carriers, and you can earn Avios on those flights as well. Qatar publishes an earning chart for every partner airline. To see how many Avios you’ll earn, visit their partner page and click on each airline’s chart.

Other Options to Earn

Qatar partners with Accor Live Limitless, and if you connect your accounts, you can collect both Avios and Rewards points from ALL on eligible flights and hotel stays. You can also earn Avios by booking a trip through Qatar Airways Holidays and through a host of other partners, both travel and non-travel.

How to Redeem Miles

Redeem for Airfare

The best way to redeem Qatar Avios is to book an award flight on Qatar Airways or one of its many partners. Qatar offers an Award Flight Finder that lets you search availability and pricing by month. You must have an account and be logged in to use it.

You can also search directly from the home page. Click on “Book Flights,” check the box that says “Book using Avios,” then enter your route and dates to see available award flights.

Qatar does not publish an award chart for its own flights. Awards are priced by geographic zone and follow peak and off-peak pricing. For partner redemptions, Qatar uses the British Airways partner chart, though it’s not publicly published and does not apply to every partner. American Airlines and Alaska Airlines follow a different chart (also unpublished).

Booking Tips

There are differences between all. For example, Qatar has elevated pricing for flights within North America on American and Alaska, so use another Avios partner (like British) for those

Changing your flight with Qatar Airways' Privilege Club

  • $25 fee for changing an award ticket up to 24 hours before departure
  • $100 fee for changing between 3 and 24 hours before departure
  • No refund offered if it is 3 hours prior to the flight.
  • For all changes, you may be subject to a difference if there is one.

Canceling your flight with Qatar Airways' Privilege Club

  • $25 fee for canceling an award ticket up to 24 hours before departure
  • $100 fee for canceling between 3 and 24 hours before departure
  • No refund offered if it is 3 hours prior to the flight.

Who is it best for?

The best use of Qatar Avios is for premium cabin redemptions on Qatar-operated flights. While partner programs can sometimes book the same flights on Qatar metal for fewer miles, premium cabin availability is limited. Booking through Qatar Privilege Club gives you access to QSuite award space before partners, which can justify the higher cost for such a premium product.

One of the biggest advantages of Qatar’s program is that it uses Avios, the same currency used by six other airlines. You can freely transfer Avios between all seven programs, which offers tremendous flexibility. Even though Qatar only partners directly with American Express, Bilt, Capital One, and Citi, you can still use Chase Ultimate Rewards by transferring to British Airways first, then to Qatar. You can also use Capital One by transferring to Finnair and then to Qatar. Avios flexibility is a major strength of this program.

Status Levels Explained

Qatar has four elite status tiers, beginning with Burgundy, which you receive simply by signing up. You can qualify for the higher tiers by earning Qpoints. These are earned by flying on Qatar, flying with its partners, or by using one of Qatar’s co-branded credit cards. Use the online calculator to see how many Qpoints you’ll earn from a specific flight.

Parameters for earning Qpoints and status rules:

  • You must earn the required number of Qpoints within a 12-month period.
  • At least 20% of those points must come from flights marketed or operated by Qatar Airways.
  • When you earn a new tier, that date becomes your renewal date.
  • You can then upgrade by earning enough Qpoints within the following 12 months.
  • To renew your status, you can earn a smaller number of Qpoints over 12 months or a higher total over 24 months.
  • Instead of meeting the 20% Qatar-flight requirement, you can also renew your status by flying four Qatar-operated segments for a 12-month renewal or eight segments for a 24-month renewal.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the three other levels, requirements you’ll need to get to each level, and the benefits of each

  • 20% discounted seat reservation
  • 25% tier bonus
  • Family member bonus
  • Lounge access
  • Two guest lounge passes
  • Free checked baggage
  • Priority boarding and check-in
  • Priority wait-listing

What to Know Before Canceling

Your Qatar Avios will not expire as long as you hold one of the co-branded cards, so keep that in mind if you plan to cancel. Keeping your Avios active should be easy, since they only expire after 36 months of no activity. Any earning or redeeming of Avios counts as activity. Transferring Avios between any of the airlines that use the currency also resets the clock, as does transferring points from a credit card partner.

FAQs

How much does the Qatar Privilege Club cost?
It is free to join Qatar Privilege Club. You start with Burgundy status and can earn and redeem Avios right away. Reaching the next tier requires earning 150 Qpoints within a year or holding the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Signature Card.
Which airlines use Avios?
British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, Loganair, Vueling, and Qatar all use Avios. You can freely transfer Avios between all seven programs, each of which has different partners and redemption options, making the currency extremely flexible.
How many Qatar points to upgrade to business?
There is no fixed Avios amount to upgrade to business class. Costs vary based on route, availability, and the fare class you booked. The best way to check pricing is to use Qatar’s online Qcalculator. Not all flights or tickets qualify for upgrades.
Can I transfer Qatar Avios to American Airlines?
You cannot transfer Avios from Qatar to American Airlines since AA does not use Avios. You can still book American Airlines award flights with Qatar Avios (provided there is saver space) because the two airlines are partners and both part of oneworld.
