Key Takeaways
No longer a slam dunk for renters, but Bilt’s strong transfer partners make the program worth watching
- Bilt now has three credit cards, all with points transferable to partners that rival, or even outshine, Chase
- You can earn points for both rent and mortgage, but you'll have to put a significant amount of other monthly spend on the card to earn it
- Earning points on housing is more complex, and Bilt’s user base is shifting
- Bilt is now best used as a daily spend travel rewards card when not working on a new card welcome offer
- The program can still be highly rewarding, but you'll need a clear plan to maximize point earning

How to Earn Points
When Bilt launched in 2021, the pitch was simple: earn credit card points on rent without paying a fee. While you can still earn points on housing payments, it's no longer that simple to do so.
In early 2026, Bilt overhauled the system and introduced a new lineup of cards. You can still earn points on rent, and now mortgage, but you must put everyday spend on the card to earn them. The more you spend, the more you earn on your housing payments.
Only one of the three cards includes a traditional welcome offer, so big sign-up bonuses aren’t the draw. The best way to earn Bilt points is through everyday spending combined with housing payments made through Bilt.
How to Maximize Points on Housing Payments with Bilt
With Bilt 2.0, all three Bilt cards let you pay rent or mortgage via bank transfer, fee-free. But unlike Bilt 1.0, these payments no longer earn points by default. And since it's now a bank transfer, housing payments are longer a credit card charge.
To earn points on rent or mortgage, you have two options.
Option 1: Earn based on a percentage of everyday spend
Here’s how it works:
- Earn points on housing automatically based on everyday spend (non-housing purchases)
- Spend at least 25% of monthly housing to earn 0.5x points on your housing
- Spend at least 50% of monthly housing to earn 0.75x points on your housing
- Spend at least 75% of monthly housing to earn 1x points on your housing
- Spend at least 100% of monthly housing to earn 1.25x points on your housing
Example
- If your rent is $1,000:
- Spend at least $250 on non-housing purchases to earn 500 points on housing (0.5x points per dollar)
- Spend at least $500 on non-housing purchases to earn 750 points on housing (0.75x points per dollar)
- Spend at least $750 on non-housing purchases to earn 1,000 points on housing (1x points per dollar)
- Spend at least $1,000 on non-housing purchases to earn 1,250 points on housing (1.25x points per dollar)
Note that you will also earn points on the non-housing spend. How much depends on which card you hold, as they all have different earning rates.
Option 2: Use Bilt Cash
Here’s how it works:
- You earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on all non-housing purchases
- Redeem $30 in Bilt Cash to earn 1x point per dollar on $1,000 in rent or mortgage
- This creates a 75% spending ratio to earn 1:1 points on your full housing payment
- This means you will need to spend 75% of your housing payment on other purchases to earn the necessary Bilt Cash to redeem for 1x points on housing
- You can use as little or as much Bilt Cash to increase the total points you earn on housing up to 1x (there is no 1.25x option with Bilt Cash)
- You still earn 4% Bilt Cash for all purchases, so if you spend more than 75%, you can bank that Bilt Cash to earn points on future month's housing payments or redeem it in other ways (more on that below)
- It's not all or nothing as you can still earn points for your housing payments if your spending ratio is less than 75%; you just won't earn the full amount
Example
- If your rent is $1,000:
- Spend $250 on non-housing purchases to earn $10 in Bilt Cash (4%). You’ll earn 333 points (1/3 of the $30 needed to unlock 1,000 points)
- Spend $500 on non-housing purchases to earn $20 in Bilt Cash (4%). You'll earn 667 points (2/3 of the $30 needed to unlock 1,000 points)
- Spend $750 on non-housing purchases to earn $30 in Bilt Cash (4%), unlocking the full 1,000 points on your housing payment.
Note that you will also earn points on that $750 in spending. How much depends on which card you hold, as they all have different earning rates.

How to Redeem Points
Using Bilt’s transfer partners is the best way to get maximum value for your Bilt points. That’s always where we recommend starting, so be sure to check out our sweet spots for Bilt partners. Bilt also has a travel portal that can offer decent redemptions, but not nearly the same value as transferring to partners.
Bilt also introduced Bilt Cash as part of Bilt 2.0. We feel the best use of Bilt Cash is to use it for redeeming points on housing, but we'll outline all other options as well.
Bilt Travel Portal
You can book travel through the Bilt Travel Portal at a value of 1.25 cents per point. It’s not the best redemption, but it’s not bad either. This wouldn’t be our first choice because Bilt’s transfer partners offer better value, but booking travel that isn’t possible with transferable miles, like rental cars or cruises, can be a good use of points when you’d rather not pay cash.
Bilt Cash
Bilt Cash is new with Bilt 2.0. It’s a fixed-value currency that replaces Milestone Rewards and is separate from Bilt Points. Unlike points, Bilt Cash is not transferable to airline or hotel partners and can only be used within the Bilt ecosystem.
You can earn Bilt Cash in a variety of ways. You'll receive a set number when you sign up for each credit card as part of its welcome offer (no spending required). You'll then earn 4% in Bilt cash on all non-housing payment purchases and $50 in Bilt Cash for every 25,000 points earned.
Use it to earn points on housing
Its most important use is unlocking points on housing payments. Every $30 in Bilt Cash lets you earn 1,000 Bilt Points on rent or mortgage, up to your full monthly payment if you choose Option 2 for how you will be rewarded for housing payments.
How it works
- If your housing payment is $2,000 per month, using $60 in Bilt Cash earns 2,000 points on that payment
- You can use as much or as little Bilt Cash as you want
- For example, you could use $30 in Bilt Cash and earn 1,000 points on a $2,000 housing payment
- The max redemption is 1x points on housing, though, so if you have more than $60 in Bilt cash, you can save it for the next month's housing or redeem it in other ways
Bilt Cash Redemption Options
Bilt marketed Bilt Cash as a way to deliver dollar-for-dollar value, but once redemption options expanded beyond earning points on housing payments, that promise started to ring hollow. While the “dollar for dollar” claim is technically true, the redemption limits Bilt has put in place make many options annoying at best and worthless at worst. Using Bilt Cash in these ways feels similar to the coupon-book style of “benefits” that has become common with credit cards, except those benefits are typically unlocked just by holding the card. With Bilt, you must first earn the Bilt Cash through spend before you can use the coupons at all.
Our favorite ways to use Bilt Cash
If you have extra Bilt Cash from signing up for the card or from choosing Option 2 for your housing payment rewards, here are our favorite ways to redeem it. Note that some options may require holding an annual fee card or having Bilt status. Where that applies, we’ll call it out.
- Unlock higher transfer bonuses: Use Bilt Cash to temporarily upgrade your Rent Day transfer bonuses to the next status tier.
- Example: A Gold Member can redeem $75 in Bilt Cash to upgrade from a 75% transfer bonus to a 100% transfer bonus
- Why we like this: Why we like this: Unlike coupon-style redemptions, this use of Bilt Cash directly improves airline or hotel transfer value, which is where points are most valuable
- Monthly hotel credit: Use Bilt Cash in the Travel Portal for a two-night minimum stay.
- Example: Use up to $50 per month for Blue and Silver members, and up to $100/month for Gold and Platinum members
- Why we like this: Palladium cardmembers benefit the most, as this can stack with the bi-annual $200 hotel credit to create true out-of-pocket savings rather than a coupon-style benefit (Palladium cardholders also get complimentary Gold status as part of the welcome offer for the rest of the year they earn it through the end of the following year)
Other ways to use Bilt Cash
Here are other ways to use Bilt Cash. Most of these are low value, coupon book style of uses that will take time and effort. You may find value in some, but most won't move the needle enough to justify the annual fee on the Obsidian or Palladium on their own. Factor in all other benefits to determine if holding either card long-term is best.

Down Payment
You can use Bilt points toward a down payment on a home purchase at a 1.5 cent per point rate. This can only be done in the United States and only once per home purchase. It wouldn’t be our first choice, but it’s a unique option worth mentioning.
What you shouldn’t do
These redemptions offer poor value compared to transferring to partners, so we don’t recommend using Bilt points this way.
- Student loan repayments: Redeem at 1 cent per point.
- Gift cards: Redeem at 0.7 cents per point at best.
- Cash back/statement credit: Redeem at 0.55 cents per point.
- Lyft rides: Apply points at checkout for 0.7 cents per point.
- Amazon: Redeem for 0.7 cents per point.

Booking Tips
Bilt uses Points.me, a points consolidator, to search for award availability across all partners. It's a great starting point to see what's available
Who is it best for?
Bilt is no longer built for the renter who just wants to earn points fee-free. The 2026 changes may have alienated some of its original customer base but they’ve also expanded its appeal to points and miles enthusiasts.
You can still earn points on rent, and now mortgage, but it takes effort. This isn’t a system where you rack up points by cycling through sign-up bonuses. Instead, the best strategy is to put everyday spend on a Bilt card. You can then choose between two options for how to unlock points on your housing payments (see the "How to Earn" section above).
The earning rates are strong, making these cards worth holding, especially when you're between welcome offers on other cards. If you want to earn 1:1 points on your entire housing payment, you’ll need to spend at least 75% of that amount on non-housing purchases each month no matter which option you choose. If you choose Option 1, you can actually earn up to 1.25x points on your housing.
Any Bilt Points you do earn can be transferred to one of the strongest partner networks in the game. That’s the real reason to pay attention to Bilt: it rewards users who can plug the system into their broader points strategy. Whether you’re deep into the hobby and regularly opening new cards, or someone who prefers the simplicity of sticking to one program, Bilt can deliver. The Palladium and Obsidian offer real potential to earn a high volume of points annually, as long as the math works out for your housing payments and overall spending budget.
Status Levels Explained
Most transferable points programs don’t offer elite status, but Bilt is an exception. Its system includes four status tiers.
Everyone starts at Blue just by signing up. To move up, you’ll need to:
- Earn a set number of Bilt Points
- Qualify through Fast Track with non-housing card spend
- Open the Bilt Palladium, which includes Gold Status as part of the welcome offer
Status is valid for the year it is earned and the entire following year.
One unique perk of all status levels is that you earn interest on all points based on the previous 30-day period, so you're encouraged to keep your points in the Bilt ecosystem until you have a specific transfer and redemption in mind. The amount is based on the FDIC published national savings rate.
Elite Status Levels
Here are the three other levels, requirements you’ll need to get to each level, and the benefits of each
- Access to better Rent Day promotions
- Save 10% off Blade airport flights booked through Bilt and receive access to Blade lounges, even not when flying
- Access to better Rent Day promotions
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue Gold/SkyTeam Elite Plus status after transferring 10k points to Flying Blue
- Save 10% off Blade airport flights booked through BiltOne free Blade flight between EWR or JFK and Manhattan or Nice and Monaco
- Receive a gift from Bilt Collection
What to Know Before Canceling
Unlike most transferable points systems, you will keep your Bilt points if you cancel your Bilt credit card, as your Bilt Rewards account remains active. However, you will no longer earn points on housing payments and will lose any card-specific benefits. For that reason, it may be worth downgrading to the no-annual-fee Bilt Blue card to preserve the option to earn points on housing in the future.
FAQs
- Can I use Bilt to pay my mortgage?
- Yes. You can now use Bilt to pay your mortgage. You can earn points on that mortgage payment by using Bilt Cash or spending a certain percentage of your housing on non-housing spend. $30 in Bilt Cash earns 1,000 points, so if your housing is $1000/month, you'll need $30 in Bilt Cash to earn 1,000 points.
- Are Bilt points worth more than Chase points?
- We value Bilt Rewards at 1.55 cents per point and Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1.60 cents per point, so Bilt holds up very well. Their transfer partners rival, and mabye even surpass Chase’s, which are widely considered the strongest in the hobby.
- What is the best way to use Bilt points?
- The best way to use Bilt points is to transfer them to one of Bilt’s partners and redeem for travel. High-value options include Alaska Airlines, Flying Blue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and World of Hyatt, all with great sweet-spot redemptions.
- Can you cash out Bilt points?
- You can, but we don’t recommend it. Cashing out Bilt points for a statement credit gives you only 0.55 cents per point, which is a poor rate. You can easily get triple that value, often more, by transferring to one of Bilt’s travel partners.
