Avoid These Pitfalls

Key Takeaways

IHG is our “utility” hotel points system. If you just need a night or two, and aren’t looking for glitz and glamor, IHG points go a long way.

  • The IHG brand consists mostly of Holiday Inns, which are in nearly every small town or international city you might want to stay. We use it as the Hyatt’s “not there” filler.
  • There are also several luxury hotels part of IHG’s umbrella, and while redemptions can be high, there is plenty of variety in IHG properties
  • The generous sign-up bonuses (especially if you wait for a special offer) will cover 6-8 nights per card.
  • IHG is part of the Chase partner rewards system, but IHG redemptions can be very high, so this isn't usually a great transfer option except for topping off.

How to Earn Points

The best way to earn IHG One Rewards is through paid stays at one of their properties. If you book an IHG property through an online travel agency like Expedia or Booking.com, you will not earn IHG points. There are also three co-branded credit cards to earn points for stays at IHG properties. Chase and Bilt are also IHG transfer partners, so you can use points from either of those systems to top up or book stays.

Earn by staying at IHG Properties

IHG, or the InterContinental Hotels Group, includes many different properties. From mid-tier hotels like Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, to extended stay options like Candlewood and Staybridge Suites, to luxury hotels like InterContinental, Kimpton, and Six Senses, there are a variety of properties to earn IHG One Rewards.

  • You will earn 10 IHG Rewards points per dollar spent at most brands.
  • You will earn 5 points per dollar at Candlewood and Staybridge Suites.
  • You only earn points on paid stays booked directly through IHG.

If you have elite status with IHG, you will receive a bonus on points earned through stays:

  • Silver Elite: 20% bonus
  • Gold Elite: 40% bonus
  • Platinum Elite: 60% bonus
  • Diamond Elite: 100% bonus

Earn by opening co-branded credit cards

IHG currently has three co-branded credit cards — two personal and one business card. They have varying signup bonuses, annual fees, benefits, and perks. Two of the three cards are keepers in our book, particularly if you stay at an IHG property at least once per year.

Earn by opening Chase or Bilt cards

IHG is transfer partners with both Chase and Bilt, so any Chase Ultimate Rewards points or Bilt points you earn through their programs can be transferred to IHG at 1:1 ratios. These are nice for topping up or booking entire stays provided you can find a good redemption. Most in the hobby who use Chase points for hotel bookings transfer to Hyatt because the value is typically better, but there are decent opportunities at IHG.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

All three IHG cards have a big spend bonus, but we don’t recommend spending to get any of them:

  • IHG One Rewards Premier:
    • Spend requirement: Earn a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on the card each calendar year.
    • Our take: We don’t recommend putting extra spend on the card for this perk.
  • IHG One Rewards Premier Business:
    • Spend requirement: Earn a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on the card each calendar year.
    • Our take: Like the personal version, it’s not worth directing spend toward this bonus.
  • IHG One Rewards Traveler:
    • Spend requirement: Earn 10,000 bonus points after $10,000 in annual spend, and earn Gold Elite Status with $20,000 in annual purchases.
    • Our take: We don’t recommend targeting either spend threshold just for these benefits.

Other Options to Earn

There are a variety of other ways to earn IHG points, but none move the needle as much as earning through paid stays or co-branded cards.

  • Meetings and events: If you join the IHG Business Rewards program (which is free, and we recommend doing so since you can transfer points to other IHG One members for free), you can earn points when you book rooms, meetings, and events for others at IHG properties. Earn 3 points per dollar spent on guest rooms, meetings and events, conference rooms, food and beverage service linked to meetings and conferences, and all-inclusive meeting packages.
  • IHG Trip Extras Portal: Earn IHG points when you book car rentals (through certain partners), tours and activities, OpenTable reservations, and group transport services through the IHG portal.

Breaking Points

How to Redeem Points

Redeem for Hotel Stays

Booking stays at IHG properties is the best use of your IHG One Rewards points. While redemptions start at 5,000 points per night at the lowest-tier properties, this is uncommon and rarely available in major cities or tourist destinations. Because IHG covers a wide range of brands, award prices can reach 150,000–200,000 points points per night.

Notes on best redemption options:

  • You can transfer IHG points to airlines, but the 5:1 transfer rate offers poor value and isn’t recommended.
  • Don’t expect Hyatt-level value when booking IHG properties.
    • We value IHG points at 0.6¢ per point compared to Hyatt at 1.7¢ per point.
    • This is why we only recommend transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to IHG for top ups.
  • Fortunately, IHG’s co-branded credit cards offer strong signup bonuses and useful perks, making them the best way to build balances for award stays.

Cash + Points

IHG also offers a cash+points booking option on all stays. Since award prices are dynamically set, these combinations vary widely. You’re effectively “buying” points when choosing this option, so always check the math:

  • If the cost per point is below 0.60¢, it may be a good deal.
  • If it’s higher, booking entirely with cash or entirely with points is usually better.

Booking Tips

Two of the three cards offer annual free night certificates up to 40,000 points, so you can get a free night every single year just by owning one cards. You can top up with points and stay at a nice property at a heavily discounted rate

Changing your flight with IHG One Rewards

  • Price change - Since IHG uses dynamic pricing, you could be subject to a rate change if you cancel and rebook
  • Can't add or remove dates to an existing reservation - You have to cancel and rebook from scratch

Canceling your flight with IHG One Rewards

  • Cash+points bookings - Refund will be given in points based on the rate you “purchased” the points at at the time of booking
  • Cancellations outside hotel policy - Points redeposited, but you will be charged a no-show fee (typically one night's stay)

Who is it best for?

While award redemptions tend to be higher than a program like Hyatt (to be fair, most hotel programs can say the same), there is still solid value to be had with IHG One Rewards. It’s a good utility system, and with IHG’s huge global footprint, you can almost always find a property to redeem points at. The variety and sheer number of hotels are major perks of the program.

IHG also has two very strong co-branded credit cards, and we recommend holding at least one if you stay at an IHG property at least once per year. The value from either IHG One Premier card — personal or business — is well worth the $99 annual fee. And because IHG partners with Chase Ultimate Rewards, it’s easy to top up when necessary. It’s an easy-to-understand rewards program, and while rooms are dynamically priced, there’s still something to be said for simplicity.

Status Levels Explained

There are five IHG elite status tiers, including IHG One Rewards Club Member, which you earn simply by signing up.

IHG One Rewards members receive:

  • Ability to earn and redeem points
  • Member rates and promotions
  • Free internet access
  • 2pm late checkout (subject to availability)

The other four elite tiers are earned by staying a certain number of qualifying nights per year or earning a set number of qualifying points. You can also earn status by holding an IHG co-branded credit card.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the elite status levels for IHG One Rewards, what it takes to reach each level, and benefits of each. The last two are elite-type programs that are separate from the top 4 status tiers

  • Earn 20% bonus points
  • Points don’t expire

Loyalty Point Rewards

You can also earn rewards outside of the different status levels by staying at IHG properties a certain number of qualifying nights per year

  • 5000 bonus points
  • 2 food and beverage rewards
  • 1 confirmable suite upgrade

What to Know Before Canceling

If you have one of the IHG Premier credit cards and stay at an IHG property at least once per year, don't cancel it. The $99 annual fee is worth the free night (up to 40,000 points). You also receive Platinum Elite status, which means your points never expire.

If you cancel any of your cards, your points will expire after 12 months of inactivity, so use them before losing them. The two IHG Personal cards follow the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule, The business card follows the 24 From Bonus Rule. If it’s been over two years since you earned the bonus from any of these cards, canceling and reapplying may earn you another bonus. If you’re in good standing with Chase, wait at least 30 days before applying again.

FAQs

How many IHG points are needed for a free night?
There are IHG rooms for as low as 5,000 points, but that’s uncommon. Since IHG uses dynamic pricing, award rates vary widely by property, date, and season. Expect to pay more in major cities, at premium brands, or during peak travel periods.
How to get the most out of IHG points?
The best value comes from holding an IHG co-branded credit card. Cardholders get the 4th night free on award stays, so booking four nights with points gives you the last night at no cost. You can even stack it—stay eight nights and get two free.
How to avoid losing IHG points?
IHG points expire after one year of inactivity. However, points never expire if you hold any IHG elite status. Since all three IHG credit cards provide Silver or Platinum status, your points stay safe as long as you keep at least one card.
Can I transfer IHG points to airlines?
You can, but it’s not a good deal. Most transfers are 5:1, so 5,000 IHG points becomes only 1,000 airline miles. These poor ratios make transfers bad value. You’ll get far more from using points for IHG hotel stays.
Does IHG status expire?
Yes. You must requalify each calendar year through qualifying nights or points. If you hold an IHG credit card, though, you keep Silver or Platinum Elite automatically every year you keep the card, without needing additional stays.
