IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
The IHG One Rewards Traveler Card offers a 80,000 (current special 90,000) point bonus, 4th night free on award stays, and automatic Silver Elite status, which are all solid perks for a no-annual-fee card. However, the IHG Premier Card provides significantly stronger long-term value. Because of the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule, opening the Traveler card prevents you from earning a bonus on the Premier card for 24 months, so it’s important to think long term before applying.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
If you're new to the points hobby or don’t yet have a hotel-specific card, the IHG One Rewards Traveler card may look appealing. It offers a 80,000 (current special 90,000) point bonus after $2,000 (currently $2,000) in purchases within the first 3 months, plus 4th night free on award stays. If you redeem points for at least three nights, the fourth night is free. There is also no annual fee on this card.
You’ll also receive automatic Silver Elite status, which includes a 20% points bonus on stays, non-expiring points, and a 2 p.m. late checkout.
Cardmembers earn:
- 3x points on utilities (internet, cable, phone, and select streaming services)
- 3x points at gas stations
- 3x points at restaurants
- 2x points on all other purchases
At IHG properties, you can earn up to 17x points:
- 5x points from the card
- 10x points as an IHG Rewards member
- 2x points from Silver Elite status
Before applying, make sure you understand the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule. You can only hold one personal IHG card at a time, and earning a bonus on this card prevents you from earning a bonus on another personal IHG card for 24 months. If you later decide you want the Premier card instead, you’ll have to wait two years to earn its sign-up bonus.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
Consider skipping this card if:
- You stay at IHG properties at least once a year as the Premier card offers better value with its free anniversary night and higher welcome offer
- You don’t like or stay at IHG properties, in which case a different hotel card (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton) may be a better fit.
What to Know About IHG One Rewards
IHG is our “utility” hotel points system. If you just need a night or two, and aren’t looking for glitz and glamor, IHG points go a long way.
- The IHG brand consists mostly of Holiday Inns, which are in nearly every small town or international city you might want to stay. We use it as the Hyatt’s “not there” filler.
- There are also several luxury hotels part of IHG’s umbrella, and while redemptions can be high, there is plenty of variety in IHG properties
- The generous sign-up bonuses (especially if you wait for a special offer) will cover 6-8 nights per card.
- IHG is part of the Chase partner rewards system, but IHG redemptions can be very high, so this isn't usually a great transfer option except for topping off.
How The IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card Fits In The IHG One Rewards Ecosystem
The IHG One Rewards Traveler card is a solid entry point into the IHG ecosystem, offering decent benefits with no annual fee.
However, because of the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule, many users should consider the higher-tier IHG One Rewards Premier card instead for its stronger long-term value:
- 140,000 point bonus after $2,000 (currently $2,000) in purchases within 3 months
- Annual free night certificate worth up to 40,000 points
- Complimentary Platinum Elite status
- Better earning rates at IHG properties and on everyday spending
The Premier’s free anniversary night alone can offset its $99 annual fee, making it the better long-term keeper card for most travelers. If your only goal is earning a sign-up bonus without paying an annual fee, the Traveler card is still a reasonable option.
If you’re near your 5/24 limit, the IHG One Rewards Premier Business card is also worth considering. The IHG 1/24 Rule does not apply to the business card, so you can hold both a personal IHG card and the business version while earning bonuses on each.
My Experience, No Filter
Personally, we’d always recommend starting with the Premier card for the free night and better sign-up bonus, but if you’re just dipping your toe into collecting hotel points, the Traveler card is an easy win with no annual fee. At some point, you'll want both these cards in your portfolio. Beyond that, IHG properties have been a boon when other hotel chains weren’t available. We've used them for quick overnight small-town stays (Hello, Madison, Ohio!) to budget-friendly international options (Rome, Italy),and having IHG points on hand has saved us hundreds of dollars on last-minute bookings.
