How to Earn Miles

You can earn miles by flying on TAP Portugal or one of its partners. They belong to Star Alliance, so you can credit miles earned on United, Air Canada, or other partners to TAP. TAP Portugal has one co-branded credit card for U.S. customers, and the only credit card transfer partners are Bilt and Capital One.

Earn by Flying TAP Portugal

You earn miles based on distance flown, the region you’re flying in, and the fare you book.

Europe and North Africa:

  • Discount: 20% miles
  • Basic: 50% miles
  • Classic: 70% miles
  • Plus: 100% miles
  • Executive: 150% miles
  • Top Executive: 200% miles

Intercontinental:

  • Discount: 20% miles
  • Basic: 50% miles
  • Classic: 100% miles
  • Plus: 150% miles
  • Executive: 150% miles
  • Top Executive: 200% miles

Earn by opening co-branded credit cards

TAP has one co-branded card — the TAP Miles&Go American Express Credit Card. It’s a decent option if you fly TAP at least once per year, but it’s not a card that ranks high on our list of recommendations.

Earn by opening Bilt or Capital One cards

Bilt and Capital One are TAP Portugal transfer partners, and both transfer to TAP at a 1:1 ratio. This makes them the easiest ways to top up your Miles&Go balance without flying.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

You can also earn TAP miles by booking flights with any Star Alliance or non-alliance partner airline. Each partner has its own earning chart. Go to this page and click on each airline to see how many miles you can earn.

Other Options to Earn

You can earn TAP miles through travel partners and a handful of non-travel partners, though none of these options offer high value. They’re best used as supplemental earning opportunities rather than something to focus on.

TAP partners with Avis, CarTrawler, and Europcar. Provide your TAP Miles&Go number to earn miles on rentals. TAP also partners with many hotels, but you may get better value by earning points with the hotel’s own loyalty program instead. To see all partners and ways to earn, go here.

How to Redeem Miles

Redeeming for Airfare

Redeeming your points for airfare on TAP Portugal is the best use of your miles. You can also redeem for Star Alliance partner flights, but other programs often offer better value for those redemptions.

TAP uses an award chart for its own flights and for Star Alliance carriers. These charts are posted on their site. You’ll need to scroll down and click “Check miles values” to download the charts for both TAP and Star Alliance. Note that the listed prices are starting rates, so searches may show higher prices depending on date and route.

Searching for award flights is simple. Go to the TAP home page, log in, enter your trip details, and select “Pay with Miles.” Partner availability appears in the same results. You can also click “show advanced search” to filter for premium cabins, direct flights, or TAP-operated flights only.

Booking Tips

There are many other Star Alliance carriers that have better redemption options than TAP. Make sure you shop around, as TAP almost certainly won’t be the best carrier to transfer miles to for Star redemptions.

Who is it best for?

TAP Miles&Go is best for travelers who fly to Portugal regularly. There are solid redemptions from the U.S. to Portugal, but if your final destination is elsewhere in Europe, other Star Alliance programs usually offer better value and lower mileage costs.

While TAP is part of Star Alliance, its partner award pricing rarely beats competitors. You’ll generally do better booking via airlines like Air Canada Aeroplan, United MileagePlus, or even Avianca LifeMiles when redeeming for partners. TAP simply doesn’t offer enough beyond Portugal to justify prioritizing the program for most travelers.

Status Levels Explained

There are four elite status tiers within TAP Miles&Go. When you sign up for a free account, you start as a TAP Miles&Go Member. To reach the higher tiers, you must earn a set number of Status Miles or take a certain number of TAP-operated flights each year. Fewer Status Miles or flights are required to retain your status once earned.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the three other levels, requirements you’ll need to get to each level, and the benefits of each

  • 25% bonus miles on TAP flights
  • Last minute upgrade
  • Seat booking and allocation for standard seats
  • Guaranteed economy seat availability until 72 hours before departure when traveling with Plus in economy class
  • Priority customer service hotline
  • Standby priority at the airport (excluding bookings made with Award Tickets)
  • Premium boarding
  • Priority baggage handling
  • Four lounge uses per customer on flights to mainland Portugal and the island, Europe, and North Africa
  • Fast track security

What to Know Before Canceling

If you cancel TAP’s only co-branded credit card, remember that your miles will expire 36 months after you earn them. There’s no way to extend their validity, so be sure you have a plan to redeem your miles before closing the card.

FAQs

Does TAP Portugal offer free stopovers?
Yes. When flying TAP from North America through Lisbon or Porto, you can turn your layover into a stopover of up to 10 days. You may pay a small increase in taxes, but the base fare will not go up, making this an easy way to add a visit to Portugal.
How many miles do I need for a free ticket?
The lowest TAP redemption is 3,250 miles for flights within mainland Portugal. You can fly between mainland Portugal and Madeira or the Azores for 5,500 miles, and between Portugal and Spain or North Africa for 6,000 miles, depending on availability.
Can I transfer TAP Miles to United?
You cannot transfer miles between airline programs. Since TAP and United are both in Star Alliance, you can book United flights using TAP miles and TAP flights using United MileagePlus miles. Each program prices awards differently, so compare before booking.
Is TAP Miles&Go free?
Yes. It is free to join TAP Miles&Go and start earning miles for flights on TAP or its partners. Advancing to higher elite tiers requires earning Status Points or flying a certain number of segments each year, but there is no fee to enroll.
