Key Takeaways

If you live in the United States, Air Canada is a complicated alternative to United Airlines, though better value can be found.

  • Similar to United, you can access Star Alliance international flights through Air Canada, but sometimes at lowerr point totals
  • You cannot book flights between two U.S. cities
  • Air Canada can be useful for international flights that naturally route through Canada.
  • Aeroplan allows up to two stopovers per flight for 5,000 points each

How to Earn Miles

As with most airline loyalty programs, the quickest way to earn Aeroplan points is to fly on Air Canada (or one of its many partner airlines) or to open a co-branded credit card. Note that how you earn points (and status credits) changed in January 2026, when the program moved to a revenue-based system.

Earn by Flying Air Canada

Aeroplan moved to a revenue-based earning system in 2026. You will earn points based on how much you spend on paid flights, and your earnings will scale with your status level.

  • Aeroplan member: 1 point per Canadian dollar
  • Aeroplan 25K: Earn 2x points per dollar
  • Aeroplan 35K: Earn 3x points per dollar
  • Aeroplan 50K: Earn 4x points per dollar
  • Aeroplan 75K: Earn 5x points per dollar
  • Aeroplan Super Elite: Earn 6x points per dollar

Earn by opening a co-branded credit card

Air Canada offers one co-branded credit card to U.S. customers, the Chase Aeroplan card. It has a solid signup bonus and useful benefits. If you fly Air Canada even once per year, the perks should outweigh the $95 annual fee.

Earn by opening cards that transfer miles to Air Canada

Air Canada partners with four transferable points programs — American Express, Chase, Bilt, and Capital One. This makes it easy to top up your balance or book flights with Air Canada or one of its many partners.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

Air Canada belongs to Star Alliance and also has a variety of non–Star Alliance partners. You can earn Aeroplan points when flying these partners, but how much you earn differs by airline and fare class. Check out all their partners here to see how many points you’ll earn with each one.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

Chase Aeroplan

There are several spend-related bonuses on this card, but we don’t recommend putting extra spend on the card solely to earn them. If you earn them through organic spending, that’s fine, but you shouldn’t aim for them intentionally.

  • Spend requirement: Receive 500 bonus points for every $2000 spent in a calendar month.
Our take: A small bonus that isn’t worth shifting spend from more valuable cards.
  • Spend requirement: Keep your Aeroplan 25K Status with $15,000 spent in a calendar year (you automatically receive this the first year you hold the card and the following calendar year).
Our take: Useful if you naturally hit the requirement, but we wouldn’t chase it.

Other Options to Earn

There are other ways to earn Aeroplan miles, but none will move the needle much. We don’t recommend going out of your way or spending extra time to earn points this way, but they’re worth being aware of:

  • Aeroplan Travel Portal: Book hotels and rental cars through the Aeroplan travel portal and earn miles.
  • Online Shopping Portal: Air Canada has an online shopping portal where you can earn points on select retailers.
  • Hotel loyalty programs: Certain hotel partners let you choose Aeroplan points for your stay, but it’s usually more valuable to earn points in the hotel’s own program.
  • Featured partners: You can link your Aeroplan account to merchants like Starbucks, Uber, and Uber Eats and earn points when you make purchases with them.

Breaking Points

How to Redeem Miles

Air Canada has around 50 airline partners, so redeeming your miles for a flight is your best option. Searching is simple on Air Canada’s website or app. Click “Book with Aeroplan points” when searching to see what’s available. You can view results by the week and easily sort by airline. Nearly all partners are included in the award search, which makes the process straightforward.

Air Canada has award charts, kind of. It uses a blend of traditional, distance-based charts with some dynamic pricing, so it’s not fully fixed. The prices shown are “starting at” amounts, and there is usually a range depending on the zones you’re flying between. You can view the award charts here.

Utilize Stopovers

One of the best ways to maximize Aeroplan points is to use their stopover program. A stopover is a layover of more than 24 hours, and with Aeroplan you can stay between 24 hours and up to 45 days.

  • For any international award booking, you can add a stopover for just 5000 points.
  • Stopovers are only available outside the US and Canada.
  • You can add stopovers to one-way, round-trip, and multi-city itineraries.
  • You are allowed one stopover per direction of travel.

You can book stopovers online by selecting the “Multi-city/Stopover” option when searching for flights:

  • Enter your departing and arriving cities.
  • Click “Add stopover for flight 1” to choose your stopover city and how many days you’ll stay.
  • Repeat the process for your return flight, if desired.
  • If the itinerary gets too complex, you can also call Aeroplan to book by phone.

Stopover example

  • Round trip from Los Angeles to Bangkok normally costs 120,000 miles in economy.
  • Add a stopover in Taipei on the way there and stay 1–45 days.
  • Add a stopover in Seoul on the way back and stay 1–45 days.
  • Total trip cost: 130,000 miles (an extra 5000 points for each stopover).

In many cases you’d have a layover in one of these cities anyway, so extending the stay can break up long flights and add extra destinations for a low cost. With smart planning, you can even build a round-the-world style trip by adding stopovers between segments for only 5000 points each time.

Hotel stays, car rentals, vacation packages, and other

You can redeem Aeroplan points for hotel stays, car rentals, and vacation packages, but none of these options will offer anywhere near the value you’ll get from redeeming for flights. Aeroplan also has a shopping portal where you can redeem points, but that is also a poor use of your points.

Who is it best for?

Aeroplan is best for those who have been in the hobby for a while and who feel comfortable analyzing award charts and more complicated redemption options. It’s a strong program with plenty of sweet spots, especially with more than 50 airline partners to redeem with, spanning both Star Alliance and non-alliance partners. But it can be complicated and time consuming to figure out how to maximize your miles, particularly for beginners.

Its award charts blend dynamic and distance-based pricing, and they can be excellent for premium cabin redemptions. Using stopovers on more complex itineraries can significantly boost value, but this requires knowledge of airline geography and the flexibility to take longer trips. For hobbyists who enjoy building creative itineraries and squeezing maximum value from their miles, Aeroplan offers a tremendous amount of potential.

Status Levels Explained

Aeroplan overhauled its elite status program in 2026, introducing a spend-based system instead of miles or segments flown. Aeroplan members now must earn SQCs, or Status Qualifying Credits, to earn elite status with the airline.

Here is how you earn SQCs:

  • 2 SQCs per CA$1 for standard fares and eUpgrade add-ons
  • 4 SQCs per CA$1 for Flex fares and up (no earning limits)
  • 1 SQC per 5 Aeroplan points earned on airline partner tickets (annual cap of 25,000 SQCs)
  • 1000 SQCs per $5000CAD spent on premium co-branded credit cards and 1000 SQCs per $20,000CAD spent on core cards (annual cap of 25,000 SQCs)
  • 1 SQC per CA$1 on Air Canada Vacations (no earning limits)
  • 1 SQC per CA$1
  • Note that there is no status boost for $50k/year in annual spend on the Chase Aeroplan card anymore
  • Note that Basic Economy Fares will not earn SQCs

Aeroplan offers five elite status levels, and status is based on the calendar year. If you meet the requirements in 2026, you’ll keep that status for the rest of 2026 and through 2027.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the current requirements and benefits of each level (as of 2025):

  • Complimentary preferred seat at check-in (excludes basic)
  • Priority airport standby
  • Two checked bags
  • Priority boarding
  • Two one-time Maple Leaf Lounge passes
  • 5 additional eUpgrade credits
  • Avis Preferred Plus status
  • Star Alliance Silver status
  • 3 bonus points per Canadian dollar spent on hotel stays and car rentals and 2 bonus points per dollar spent at the Aeroplan eStore

Loyalty Point Rewards

Aeroplan introduced Milestone Rewards in 2026, starting at 10,000 SQCs and every 10k SQCs up to 200k. Then every 20k SQCs after that up to 1 million. At each milestone, members receive 10 or 20 eUpgrade credits automatically, then choose one of the following benefits below:

  • Additional eUpgrade credits
  • Priority Reward vouchers (50% off points for eligible flight redemptions
  • Bonus Aeroplan points
  • Maple Leaf lounge passes
  • Discounts on hotel, car rental, gift card, or merchandise redemptions
  • Gifting Aeroplan elite status to a friend
  • Air Canada gift cards

What to Know Before Canceling

Aeroplan miles expire after 18 months of inactivity. If you cancel your Chase Aeroplan credit card, your miles remain safe for at least that long. But remember this is the only Aeroplan co-branded card available in the United States, and it follows Chase’s 24 From Bonus rule. If you cancel, you won’t be eligible for another signup bonus until 24 months have passed since you received the first one.

FAQs

Do Aeroplan members get a free checked bag?
No, Aeroplan membership alone does not include a free checked bag. All five elite tiers receive at least two free bags, and the Chase Aeroplan credit card adds one free checked bag for you and up to eight companions booked on the same reservation.
Is United Airlines part of Aeroplan?
United is not part of the Aeroplan program, but it is an Air Canada partner. You can redeem Aeroplan points to fly United, and their flights appear in your search results whenever United flies the route and award space is available for that itinerary.
What are the best Aeroplan redemptions?
Aeroplan has many strong redemptions. Short flights under 500 miles within the U.S. or Canada can cost as few as 7,000 points. You can also reach Europe for as little as 35,00 points each way if the total distance is under 4,000 miles, which is good value.
How many points to fly business class to Europe?
Business class flights to Europe can be booked for as little as 60,000 Aeroplan points one-way. This aligns with many major airline programs, though some carriers offer lower rates, such as American around 50,000 and Iberia from roughly 40,500 miles.
Can you transfer miles from Air Canada to United?
You cannot transfer Aeroplan miles to United or any other airline. However, United is a Star Alliance partner, so you can redeem Aeroplan points to fly United. Their flights will appear in your search results whenever award space is available for that route.
