Key Takeaways

Avianca LifeMiles has good value, especially for international premium cabin flights.

  • LifeMiles often has the lowest business class pricing to Europe and Asia
  • Domestic short-haul flights also have some sweet spots, as does travel between the U.S. and South America
  • Flexible dates and using an award tool will be key to finding these hidden gems
  • Their booking site is clunky, but occasional “mixed cabin” quirks can work in your favor.
  • Transfers from Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt make LifeMiles easy to accumulate.

How to Earn Miles

The most efficient ways to earn Avianca LifeMiles are to fly on Avianca or one of its partners or to open one of their co-branded credit cards to earn miles directly. Avianca partners with several major credit card programs, giving you the flexibility to transfer points for top ups or to book flights with Avianca or its partners.

Earn by Flying Avianca

You earn LifeMiles on Avianca flights based on the fare type you book. Elite members earn additional bonus miles on top of the base earning rates.

You will earn 5 miles per dollar spent on the following additional services:

  • Seat selection
  • Avianca lounges
  • Upgrades to business class
  • Empty seat purchases
  • Priority boarding

Miles earned per dollar by fare type:

  • Basic/Light: 3 miles per dollar
  • Classic: 6 miles per dollar
  • Flex: 8 miles per dollar
  • Business/INSIGNIA: 10 miles per dollar

Elite bonus earning rates:

  • Red Plus: 10% bonus
  • Silver: 20% bonus
  • Gold: 60% bonus
  • Diamond: 80% bonus

Earn by Opening Co-Branded Credit Cards

Avianca offers two co-branded credit cards backed by American Express. Both are personal cards and come with different signup bonuses, annual fees, and perks. These cards are an easy way to earn LifeMiles directly.

Earn by Opening Transferable Miles Cards

The following major credit card rewards programs all partner with Avianca and transfer to LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio:

You can also transfer hotel points, but the rates are poor:

We don’t recommend transferring hotel points unless you need a small top up and have no other options.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

Avianca is part of Star Alliance, so you can earn LifeMiles when flying with partners such as United, Lufthansa, Air Canada, and many others. The earning rates vary by airline, fare class, and route.

  • Earn LifeMiles on all eligible Star Alliance flights.
  • Each partner has its own earning chart and mileage rules.
  • Always check the specific partner’s earning table before booking.

Our Favorite Cards

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

Avianca LifeMiles Elite American Express Credit Card

  • Spend bonus: Earn an extra 40,000 miles when you spend $25,000 on the card in the first year.
  • Our take: While 40,000 additional miles is solid, putting $25,000 in spend on this card isn’t the best strategy for most travelers. After meeting the initial $3,000 minimum spend for the 60,000-mile welcome offer, you’d likely earn far more by directing that extra spend toward signup bonuses on other cards.

Other Options to Earn

Avianca has a travel portal where you can book hotels, rental cars, cruises, and experiences while earning miles on all purchases. Prices in these portals are rarely the lowest available, so this usually isn’t the best way to earn miles.

How to Redeem Miles

Redeeming your LifeMiles for flights on Avianca or its partners will almost always give you the highest value. The program is often overlooked, but there are many strong sweet spots across Avianca, Star Alliance partners, and select non-alliance partners.

  • Best value: Award flights on Avianca or Star Alliance partners like United, Lufthansa, and Air Canada.
  • Mixed-cabin awards: LifeMiles uniquely allows mixed class bookings (for example, economy + business on the same ticket), which is rare and can provide exceptional value.

The LifeMiles website is known for being slow, buggy, and unreliable, but once results load, you’ll see availability across Avianca, United, and other Star Alliance partners.

How to search for award flights

  • Use the LifeMiles app or go directly to LifeMiles.com (not the main Avianca site, though you can navigate from there).
  • All search results display in miles, making comparisons simple.
  • LifeMiles uses a zone-based award chart for most flights. Partner airlines follow the same Star Alliance chart, though it is buried on the site.
  • You can view the Star Alliance award chart on the LifeMiles site (scroll down the page once you find it).

Hotel Stays, Car Rentals, and Other Redemptions

You can redeem LifeMiles for a variety of travel and non-travel purchases, but these options offer poor value compared to booking flights. We recommend avoiding these redemptions unless you have a small balance to burn.

Avianca also has a travel portal where you can use LifeMiles for these bookings, but prices are often inflated and rarely competitive compared to paying cash.

Booking Tips

Pay much less in taxes and surcharges through Lifemiles than when booking directly with those partner programs. Lufthansa charges hundreds of dollars through Miles and More, but Avianca LifeMiles only charges $50-80

Changing your flight with Avianca Lifemiles

  • $150 fee for changing your flight plus a potential rate change

Canceling your flight with Avianca Lifemiles

  • $50-200 cancellation fee for canceling. Avianca displays the cancellation price when you book
  • It can take 24-72 hours for your miles to show back up in your account after canceling

Who is it best for?

If you are an experienced points user, Avianca is a strong program with a variety of sweet spots, many of them with its partners. You can find high-value international premium cabin redemptions on Star Alliance carriers like United, Lufthansa, Swiss, and Singapore Airlines. The rates are competitive, and the biggest advantage is that Avianca does not pass on fuel surcharges, which can save hundreds of dollars on long-haul flights.

LifeMiles is not always the easiest program to use, as knowledge of booking partner awards is needed to get the most value. Since Avianca is a transfer partner of Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt, it is easy to accumulate points to transfer. However, Avianca offers only two co-branded credit cards, so unless you also fly the airline throughout the year, you’ll rely mostly on transferable points from credit card systems.

LifeMiles isn’t the best program for beginners. Searching for award flights can be frustrating, as the site and app are slow and clunky. Phantom award space is known to appear, so confirming availability before transferring points is always wise. For savvy travelers who have been in the hobby for a while and know how to find partner award space, LifeMiles is an excellent program with plenty of outsized value.

Status Levels Explained

There are four elite status levels with Avianca. To qualify for each tier, you must earn a specific number of Elite Qualifying Miles, with a minimum portion earned on Avianca-operated flights. All requirements must be met between January 1 and December 31 each year.

Elite Status Levels

See below for qualifications to reach each tier and benefits of each. The last two are lifetime status possibilities

  • 1 Avianca lounge entry
  • Emergency row and Plus seat selection at check-in (does not apply to basic and light fares)
  • Economy seat selection (does not apply to basic and light fares)
  • 10% Elite bonus on Avianca flights
  • Family Pooling
  • Discount on Lifemiles+ Latin America subscription
  • 24-month validity for miles
  • Star Silver Star Alliance benefits

What to Know Before Canceling

LifeMiles expire after 12 months of inactivity, so before canceling a card, it’s important to decide what you want to do with your miles. There have been inconsistent reports about whether transferring miles from other programs resets expiration. Avianca’s terms state this does not extend the life of your miles, so don’t rely on it.

If you have a co-branded card, a single purchase will add miles to your account and reset the clock. If you’re not planning to book a flight within the next year, consider holding the card for one more year to keep your miles alive.

Family pooling is available only to elite members. If you hold status or have a LifeMiles+ subscription, your miles are safe for 24 months instead of 12.

FAQs

How to transfer LifeMiles to another person?
You can transfer LifeMiles to another person, but it costs $15 per 1,000 miles, which is steep. A better option is creating a Family Pool to share miles for free with up to seven people, though this requires elite status. Holding the Avianca LifeMiles Elite card gives you complimentary Silver status.
What is LifeMiles Plus?
LifeMiles+ is a paid subscription that gives you a 10–25% discount on Avianca flights and 10% off Star Alliance and partner awards. It also removes change and cancellation fees on award bookings. Your points expiration extends to 24 months as long as your subscription stays active.
Can you transfer United miles to Avianca miles?
You cannot transfer United miles to Avianca, but both belong to Star Alliance. You can book United flights through Avianca with LifeMiles and vice versa, though booking an Avianca flight through United isn't as easy. You can filter specifically for United when searching LifeMiles awards.
How many miles are needed to travel to the Galapagos?
Award prices to the Galapagos vary widely based on your departure city, dates, and availability. Avianca is one of only two airlines that serve the islands, which makes LifeMiles a strong option. Expect higher prices during peak months such as December–January and July–August.
