Amex Green Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
If you’re just getting started with American Express, the Green Card can be a logical first step because it preserves your eligibility for future welcome offers on the Gold and Platinum cards. The 40,000-point welcome bonus still offers decent value, but it's not especially compelling relative to the $150 annual fee. The CLEAR Plus credit can help offset that cost, although many travelers already receive CLEAR through another card. For most people, the Green Card is more about positioning within the Membership Rewards ecosystem than becoming a long-term wallet card.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
The American Express Green Card offers a 40,000-point welcome bonus after spending $3,000 in the first three months. While the $150 annual fee may seem high relative to the welcome offer, the card can make sense if you're looking to establish a position within the Membership Rewards ecosystem.
- CLEAR Plus credit worth up to $199 annually
- 3x Membership Rewards points on travel
- 3x Membership Rewards points on transit purchases
- 3x Membership Rewards points on dining worldwide
The Green Card's biggest advantage is strategic rather than practical. Because of the Amex Family Rule, opening the Green first preserves your ability to earn welcome offers on all three consumer Membership Rewards cards. The ideal sequence is Green, then Gold, and finally Platinum. Some people view that alone as a compelling reason to get the card. However, if you're close to your5/24 limit, missing out on the Green's relatively small welcome offer probably isn't a major loss. The card can also serve as a reasonable downgrade option from the Gold or Platinum if you're no longer getting enough value from those cards to justify their annual fees.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
This card may not be the best option if:
- You already have Clear Plus and won’t benefit from the credit.
- You’ve already opened the American Express Gold and/or Platinum cards, making you ineligible for the Green card’s sign-up bonus based on American Express Family rules.
What to Know About Amex Membership Rewards
Amex points are great in theory. We just find them harder to collect and more expensive to hold than Chase points.
- If you’re in the points game long enough, you’ll dabble in both main systems (Chase & Amex).
- Amex has a one card bonus every 7 years rule, so ultimately, there will be more of a limit to how many you can collect via sign-up bonuses.
- There is only one no-fee card that allows you to earn and keep Membership Rewards points - the Blue Business Plus card.
- Delta and Hilton are solid transfer values and having Amex points gives you top-off flexibility if you are invested in either of those systems.
- We do find Amex travel a higher quality of service over the Chase travel portal.
How The Amex Green Credit Card Fits In The Amex Membership Rewards Ecosystem
American Express has two key rules that impact sign-up bonus eligibility: the Amex 1/7 Rule and the Amex Family Rule. Because of the Family Rule, the ideal sequence for earning welcome offers on all three personal Membership Rewards cards is Green, then Gold, then Platinum.
That said, the Green card’s smaller bonus and limited benefits lead many people to skip it and start with the Gold instead.
- Amex Gold Card: 60,000 point bonus after $6,000 in purchases with a $325 annual fee. Offers strong spending multipliers, statement credits, and access to airline and hotel transfer partners.
- Amex Platinum Card: 150,000 point bonus after $12,000 in purchases with a $895 annual fee. Includes extensive travel and statement credits plus premium travel perks, making it best for frequent travelers.
If your goal is to maximize Membership Rewards and you're not concerned about your 5/24 status, starting with the Green card preserves your ability to earn welcome offers on all three cards. If you're trying to maximize value from each application, though, skipping the Green and starting with the Gold is a perfectly reasonable strategy.
