Amex Green Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

If you’re just getting started with American Express, the Green Card can be a logical first step so you are eligible for future bonuses on higher tier cards. The 40,000 point bonus still offers decent value, but it’s not especially strong relative to the $150 annual fee. The CLEAR Plus credit can help offset that cost, though many users may already have it as a perk with other cards. For most people, this card is more about positioning within the Amex ecosystem than wanting it in their wallets long-term.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

The 40,000 point bonus comes after $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. Although the card's annual fee is $150, the CLEAR Plus credit (worth $199) can offset that cost if you don’t already receive it from another card.

Beyond that, the card’s benefits are fairly limited. You’ll earn 3x points on travel, transit, and dining, but there are few additional perks. If you already plan to use CLEAR each year, the card can effectively cover its own cost, and you'll receive the welcome bonus in year one.

Once you meet the spending requirement for the Green card, you can move on to the Gold and then Platinum cards, as they must be opened in sequence to qualify for each sign-up bonus due to the Amex Family Rule..

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

This card may not be the best option if:

  • You already have Clear Plus and won’t benefit from the credit.
  • You’ve already opened the American Express Gold and/or Platinum cards, making you ineligible for the Green card’s sign-up bonus based on American Express Family rules.
Amex Membership Rewards

What to Know About Amex Membership Rewards

Amex points are great in theory. We just find them harder to collect and more expensive to hold than Chase points.

  • If you’re in the points game long enough, you’ll dabble in both main systems (Chase & Amex).
  • Amex has a one card bonus every 7 years rule, so ultimately, there will be more of a limit to how many you can collect via sign-up bonuses.
  • There is only one no-fee card that allows you to earn and keep Membership Rewards points - the Blue Business Plus card.
  • Delta and Hilton are solid transfer values and having Amex points gives you top-off flexibility if you are invested in either of those systems.
  • We do find Amex travel a higher quality of service over the Chase travel portal.

How The Amex Green Credit Card Fits In The Amex Membership Rewards Ecosystem

American Express has two key rules that impact sign-up bonus eligibility: the Amex 1/7 Rule and the Amex Family Rule. Because of this, starting with the Green Card can make sense if you plan to open all three personal Membership Rewards cards.

That said, the Green card’s smaller bonus and limited benefits lead many users to skip it and start with the Gold instead.

  • Amex Gold Card: 60,000 point bonus after $6,000 in purchases with a $325 annual fee. Offers strong spending multipliers, statement credits, and access to airline and hotel transfer partners.
  • Amex Platinum Card: 150,000 point bonus after $12,000 in purchases with a $895 annual fee. Includes extensive travel and statement credits plus premium travel perks, making it best for frequent travelers.

If your goal is to maximize Membership Rewards, starting with the Green card preserves your ability to earn bonuses on all three cards. But if you don’t want to use a 5/24 slot on a lower-value card, skipping it is a perfectly reasonable strategy.
