Amex Gold Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
The American Express Gold Card is one of our favorite cards for everyday spending, particularly on dining and groceries. While the standard 60,000-point welcome offer isn't always compelling relative to the $325 annual fee, the card's 4x earning rates can generate a substantial number of Membership Rewards points over time. If you're considering the card primarily for the welcome offer, it may be worth waiting for an elevated bonus. If you spend heavily on food and can naturally use the statement credits, the Gold can be a strong long-term keeper card.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
The standard welcome bonus for this card is 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 in six months. While that isn't an eye-popping bonus relative to the card's annual fee, the six-month spending window makes it easier to earn than many competing offers. If you are in no rush, though, we recommend waiting for an elevated offer because of Amex's 1/7 Rule.
The real appeal of the card is its earning structure. It offers 4x points on dining and groceries, making it one of the strongest cards for everyday spending. If food is one of your largest spending categories, the Gold can generate a significant number of extra points each year.
American Express Membership Rewards points are also highly flexible, with 18 airline transfer partners and three hotel partners.
The card's $325 annual fee can be offset by several statement credits:
- $100 annually at U.S. Resy restaurants (split into two $50 semi-annual credits)
- $7 monthly Dunkin' credit
- $10 monthly dining credit with Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder, Five Guys, Goldbelly, or Wine.com (Goldbelly and Wine.com end June 30, 2026)
- $10 in Uber Cash each month
- Complimentary Hertz Five Star status
All told, these credits can total $420 in annual value, more than offsetting the annual fee if you use them organically.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
Here are some exceptions where the card might not be good for you:
- American Express sign-up bonuses are only valid once every seven years. You might want to wait for a higher offer if you can
- If you don’t dine out often and won’t take advantage of the card’s statement credits
What to Know About Amex Membership Rewards
Amex points are great in theory. We just find them harder to collect and more expensive to hold than Chase points.
- If you’re in the points game long enough, you’ll dabble in both main systems (Chase & Amex).
- Amex has a one card bonus every 7 years rule, so ultimately, there will be more of a limit to how many you can collect via sign-up bonuses.
- There is only one no-fee card that allows you to earn and keep Membership Rewards points - the Blue Business Plus card.
- Delta and Hilton are solid transfer values and having Amex points gives you top-off flexibility if you are invested in either of those systems.
- We do find Amex travel a higher quality of service over the Chase travel portal.
How The Amex Gold Credit Card Fits In The Amex Membership Rewards Ecosystem
The American Express Gold Card sits in the middle of Amex's consumer Membership Rewards lineup and is a card you should get at some point because of its strong earning rates on dining and groceries. Before applying, understand Amex's Family Rule. To remain eligible for the welcome offers on all three consumer cards, you generally need to get them in the order of Green, Gold, and then Platinum.
- Amex Green Card: $150 annual fee and a 40,000-point welcome bonus after spending $3,000 in three months. The Green is best suited for travelers looking for a lower annual fee and a CLEAR Plus credit. Some people skip this card and start with the Gold, depending on their 5/24 status and overall card strategy.
- Amex Gold Card: $325 annual fee and a 60,000-point welcome bonus after spending $6,000 in six months. The Gold stands out for its 4x earning on dining and groceries, making it one of the strongest cards for everyday spending.
- Amex Platinum Card: $895 annual fee and a 150,000-point welcome bonus after spending $12,000 in six months. It's best suited for frequent travelers who can maximize its extensive travel benefits, lounge access, and statement credits.
All three consumer cards count toward your 5/24 status. However, American Express also offers Business Green, Gold, and Platinum cards. The same Family Rule does not apply to the business versions, allowing you to get them in any order, although the Amex 1/7 Rule still applies. If you're trying to preserve 5/24 slots, the business cards may offer a better path into the Membership Rewards ecosystem.
My Experience, No Filter
My wife and I focused on Chase cards for 18 months until she was denied for a business card. We needed a new approach to “cool off” from Chase, so we jumped on an elevated offer of 90,000 points for the Amex Gold (we didn’t have an Amex card yet). The Green card only had a 40,000-point offer, so we skipped it, knowing we’d miss out on that sign-up bonus in the future.
With 4x points on groceries and restaurants, this card really fits our family of five since food is our biggest everyday expense. We don’t often use the additional dining credits, so we might downgrade or cancel in a year. Still, it’s nice to diversify and have other transfer partner options beyond Chase and Capital One.
