The Highlights
Hilton is a key component of the points strategy for hotel stays for 3 big reasons:
1. Points are easy to accumulate
2. They have locations in nearly every city globally
3. The perks are great for cardholders
Hilton currently has 4 different cards to choose from -- and they don’t have the strict limitations on carrying different cards as Marriott and Hyatt do. That could easily add up to 500,000 points per person over a few years, which equates to 20-25 hotel nights. The cards also have high multipliers... as high as 30x on Hilton spends, which can be coupled with membership bonuses and 5-7x on select categories and 3x on everyday spending.
Most Hilton cards also come with Gold status. That gives you room upgrades (really nice ones usually) and complimentary breakfast, along with all of the standard hotel membership bonuses.
The downfall of Hilton points is they’re not a good value for transfer. So unless you’re just topping off your points to have enough for booking, it isn’t a good value to transfer Amex Points to Hilton points.

Status Levels Explained
Hilton has a few different levels -- each offering something just a smidge better than the status below it. Here’s a breakdown of each one, what sets them apart, and how to qualify.
Hilton Honors Silver
- Earned after 10 nights or 4 stays or 25,000 Hilton Honors Points.
- Hilton Honors Silver Status comes automatically with the (Hilton Honors Amex card).

- 20% Bonus on all Hilton Points, translated to an additional 2 extra points per dollar at most properties
- 5th night free on award stays
- Bottled water
- Digital Check-in
- Late check-out
- Complimentary in-room and lobby internet
Hilton Honors Gold
- Earned after 40 nights or 20 stays or 75,000 Hilton Honors Points.
- Hilton Honors Gold Status comes automatically with the (Hilton Honors Amex Surpass card), the (Hilton Honors Amex Business Card), and the Amex (Platinum Card).
Hilton Honors Gold Benefits include all Silver benefits, plus:
- Free Breakfast
- 80% Bonus on all Hilton Points, translated to an additional 8 extra points per dollar at most properties
- Room Upgrades based on availability at participating locations
- Bonus Points and more, you can choose if you prefer to forego breakfast to collect bonus points or enjoy something else like snacks or drinks, depending on the hotel
Hilton Honors Diamond
- Earned after 60 nights or 30 stays or 120,000 Hilton Honors Points.
- Hilton Honors Diamond Status comes automatically with the (Hilton Honors Amex Aspire card).
Your Hilton Honors Diamond Benefits include all Silver benefits, plus:
- 100% Bonus on all Hilton Points, translated to an additional 10 extra points per dollar at most properties
- Complimentary premium in-room and lobby internet
- Room Upgrades to premium rooms and suites where and when available
- Bonus Points per stay
- 48 Hour room guaranteed
- Executive Lounge Access, where you can have an evening spread of hors d’oeuvres and complimentary alcohol at certain locations
What to Know Before Canceling
Hilton points are not linked to any specific card so once they are in your Hilton account, with or without the card, they are yours, to do what you please with. The cards do have nice perks though, and those will be lost once you cancel out the card. Pooling points is especially lenient within the Hilton family and extremely useful.
