Amex Platinum Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

When it comes to premium travel cards, the American Express Platinum has no true rival, but that level of luxury comes with a hefty $895 annual fee. The standard sign-up bonus is 150,000 points, and the Platinum Card offers one of the most extensive collections of statement credits and travel benefits available. Its long-term value depends entirely on whether those perks fit your lifestyle and travel habits.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

This is Amex’s flagship personal travel card, packed with benefits for frequent travelers and lifestyle spenders. While the $895 annual fee is substantial, the welcome offer alone can offset much of that cost in the first year. Whether the card is worth the annual fee in year two depends on if you organically use the various credits, and how much you value the luxury travel perks that come along with it.

  • Welcome offer: 150,000 points after spending $12,000 in 6 months
  • Travel benefits:
    • $200 airline incidental credit
    • $600 hotel credit through Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection ($300 every six months)*
    • Access to the Global Lounge Collection, including Priority Pass lounges
    • Centurion Lounge access
    • 10 Delta Sky Club visit-days per year
    • $209 CLEAR Plus credit
  • Lifestyle credits:
    • $400 Resy credit ($100 per quarter)
    • $200 Uber Cash ($15 monthly plus $20 in December)
    • $120 Uber One credit
    • $300 digital entertainment credit
    • $300 Lululemon credit ($75 per quarter)
    • $155 Walmart+ membership
    • $300 Equinox credit
    • $300 SoulCycle credit (requires Equinox enrollment)
    • $200 Oura credit (enrollment required)
    • $100 Saks Fifth Avenue credit ($50 twice per year, ending July 1, 2026)
  • Additional protections:
    • Premium purchase protection
    • Extended warranty coverage
    • Access to Amex Offers

If you naturally use several of these credits each year, the Platinum Card can easily justify its annual fee. If you find yourself changing your behavior just to use the credits, it may not be the right fit.

*The Hotel Collection requires a two-night minimum stay.

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

This card may not be the best fit if:

  • You can’t find a targeted or elevated welcome offer
  • You don’t use the credits or perks frequently enough to justify the $895 fee
  • You haven’t yet earned sign up bonuses from the Amex Green or Gold cards. The Amex Family Rule means getting the Platinum first can lock you out of those other bonuses
Amex Membership Rewards

What to Know About Amex Membership Rewards

Amex points are great in theory. We just find them harder to collect and more expensive to hold than Chase points.

  • If you’re in the points game long enough, you’ll dabble in both main systems (Chase & Amex).
  • Amex has a one card bonus every 7 years rule, so ultimately, there will be more of a limit to how many you can collect via sign-up bonuses.
  • There is only one no-fee card that allows you to earn and keep Membership Rewards points - the Blue Business Plus card.
  • Delta and Hilton are solid transfer values and having Amex points gives you top-off flexibility if you are invested in either of those systems.
  • We do find Amex travel a higher quality of service over the Chase travel portal.

How The Amex Platinum Credit Card Fits In The Amex Membership Rewards Ecosystem

Before applying for any personal American Express card, be aware of two important rules:

  1. You can generally only receive the welcome bonus on a specific Amex card once every 7 years.
  2. The Amex Family Rule requires you to apply for these cards in the order of Green, then Gold, then Platinum if you want to remain eligible for all three welcome offers. Starting with the Platinum means you won't be eligible for the Green or Gold bonuses later.

With those rules in mind, here are the other cards in the Membership Rewards personal card family:

  • Amex Green Card
    • Annual Fee: $150
    • Welcome Bonus: 40,000 points
    • Who it's for: Travelers who want to preserve eligibility for all three Membership Rewards bonuses. Its primary perk is a CLEAR Plus credit worth up to $199 annually.
  • Amex Gold Card
    • Annual Fee: $325
    • Welcome Bonus: 60,000 points
    • Who it's for: Our favorite Membership Rewards card for many people, thanks to its strong earning rates on dining and groceries plus multiple statement credits.

All Amex personal cards count toward your 5/24 status. However, American Express also offers Business Green, Gold, and Platinum cards. The Amex Family Rule does not currently apply to those cards, allowing you to get them in any order. If you're trying to preserve 5/24 slots, the business versions can be an attractive way to earn Membership Rewards points, although the Amex 1/7 Rule still applies.

My Experience, No Filter

I enjoyed the Amex Platinum and got solid value from the welcome offer and the credits. The Uber and airline perks were helpful, and I appreciated the Centurion Lounge experience. But as time went on, I found the Chase Sapphire Reserve was simply a better fit for how I personally travel and redeem points.

The Chase portal’s simplicity, the 1.5x redemption boost, and the ability to pool points from multiple no-annual-fee cards gave me more flexibility. While Amex Platinum delivers luxury, the Sapphire Reserve delivers more consistent value for my day-to-day and travel lifestyle—so after the first year, I moved on.
