Airfare, Europe
Best Cards for Europe Flights
Europe offers some of the best points values in the world, but high surcharges can quickly ruin a good redemption. Nothing is worse than finding a great mileage price only to be hit with hundreds of dollars in fees. Because of this, the best systems aren’t always the ones with the lowest point costs, but the ones that let you avoid high taxes while still delivering strong value on award airfare.
Our Rankings
1 | Citi Strata Elite
If you’re looking to fly to Europe, the Citi Strata Elite is the card we’d recommend getting. It’s Citi’s premium card and includes Priority Pass access and Admirals Club passes, which come in handy because American Airlines is the strongest overall program for flying to and from Europe. American has strong economy and premium cabin options on its own metal and on partners, with low taxes on most routes. Citi is the only transferable points system that transfers directly to American, which is the primary reason its top card leads this list. Citi also transfers to Air Canada Aeroplan and Avianca, two other top-tier programs for Europe with predictable pricing and generally low taxes. While this card offers fewer lifestyle perks than some others on our list, it provides the widest range of practical award options, making it the best choice if your primary goal is booking flights to Europe with points.

2 | Amex Platinum
The Amex Platinum sits just behind the Strata Elite but still offers tremendous value for flying to Europe. Citi edges it out because direct access to American Airlines consistently produces lower taxes and more predictable pricing across both economy and business class. Its lounge access is the best of any card on this list, which is worth factoring in for long international trips. You can also use the airline incidental credit to offset costs like checked bags and seat fees. The large signup bonus provides a strong base of points to work with. Amex partners with ANA, one of the top programs for flying to Europe, especially in business class via TAP. ANA also offers solid economy options on partners like Singapore Airlines, United, and Air Canada, all with relatively low taxes. Amex transfers to Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, and Aer Lingus as well, which can offer good economy value, but taxes vary widely. It’s critical to check fees closely, as some partners, particularly British Airways, can erase the value of an otherwise cheap points redemption.
3 | Bilt Palladium
The Bilt Palladium is the highest-tier card in the Bilt ecosystem and honestly the only Bilt card we’d recommend. It ranks lower than the top cards here not because of weak redemptions, but because earning points requires consolidating most of your spend onto a single card. It’s the only Bilt card that offers a traditional signup bonus, and you can collect a large number of points by earning on housing payments. That said, committing to Bilt as your primary card is essential, as you must put significant non-housing spend on the card to unlock those housing points. Bilt earns its spot on this list due to its exclusive partnership with Atmos, which offers some of the best award redemptions to Europe in both economy and premium cabins through partners like American, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. Bilt also transfers to United, which doesn’t always offer the lowest points prices but does keep taxes low on most redemptions, including flights on partners like Lufthansa and Swiss without the high surcharges charged by those programs directly.

4 | Chase Sapphire Reserve
The Sapphire Reserve follows closely behind the Bilt Palladium and remains a strong, flexible option for travel to Europe. It doesn’t unlock the absolute cheapest award flights, but it offers reliability and flexibility when you want multiple paths to book. While the Reserve isn’t as dominant as it once was, the $300 annual travel credit can offset costs immediately, and lounge access through Priority Pass and the Chase Sapphire Lounge network adds real value on long-haul trips. You may also be able to use several of the card’s statement credits during European travel. Chase partners with Air Canada, United, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, all solid options for award flights to Europe in both economy and business class. While portals aren’t our preferred way to book flights, the Reserve does give access to points boost redemptions up to 2 cents per point, which can be a useful fallback. Chase Ultimate Rewards are easy to earn and broadly useful, even if they don’t always deliver the very best deal.
5 | Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite
The Atmos Summit is the top card for Atmos, the shared loyalty program for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The Annual Global Companion Award alone gives this card outsized value, especially when paired with one of the strongest point systems for flying to Europe. The card also comes with a strong signup bonus, a free checked bag, and two lounge passes each quarter. Alaska offers some of the best economy and business class redemptions to Europe on partners like American, Finnair, and Aer Lingus, often with low taxes compared to other programs. While award searches require a close eye when it comes to taxes with certain partners, there are plenty of bookable, low-fee options that make this card exceptionally valuable for Europe-bound trips.
6 | Capital One Venture X
While it rarely tops rankings like these, there always seems to be a place for the Capital One Venture X. That’s due to its relatively low annual fee for a premium card, strong flexibility through both partner transfers and the ability to erase travel purchases with points, and the simplicity of benefits without a coupon-book feel. Capital One partners with Avianca and Air Canada, two solid systems for airfare to Europe with predictable pricing and generally low taxes. You can also transfer to British Airways, which isn’t usually ideal for direct redemptions, but it does unlock access to the broader Avios ecosystem, giving you more flexibility to find competitive award flights across Europe.
7 | American Airlines Citi AAdvantage Executive
American is our favorite airline for travel to Europe, so it makes sense that its top card earns a spot on this list. The AAdvantage Executive pairs a strong signup bonus with full Admirals Club access, giving you both a healthy points balance and meaningful comfort on long-haul trips. If the high annual fee is a concern, the Globe card is a solid fallback option with many of the same redemption strengths. American offers excellent sweet spots on its own metal and through oneworld partners, with low taxes on flights operated by Finnair, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. Availability is consistently strong, making American one of the most reliable programs for booking award flights to Europe.
