Amex Business Green Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
We do not recommend the American Express Business Green credit card for most users. The sign-up bonus is only 15,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first three months. Although it can help you earn American Express points without affecting your 5/24 status, the card still carries a $95 annual fee and offers few other benefits aside from earning 2x points on flights and prepaid hotels through the American Express portal.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
The sign-up bonus is 15,000 points after $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. This can be an easy way to collect some Membership Rewards points without affecting your 5/24 status, though 15,000 points will not stretch very far.
Cardmembers also earn:
- 2X points on flights and prepaid hotels booked through the American Express portal
- 1X points on all other purchases
You can add additional employee expense cards to your account, and their points will credit to the main cardmember’s account. Additionally, the card provides basic travel insurance coverage when you use it for travel expenses, including car rental loss and damage insurance plus lost luggage insurance.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
This card may not be a good fit for you if:
- You want a higher welcome offer or more benefits, even if it means paying a higher annual fee.
What to Know About Amex Membership Rewards
Amex points are great in theory. We just find them harder to collect and more expensive to hold than Chase points.
- If you’re in the points game long enough, you’ll dabble in both main systems (Chase & Amex).
- Amex has a one card bonus every 7 years rule, so ultimately, there will be more of a limit to how many you can collect via sign-up bonuses.
- There is only one no-fee card that allows you to earn and keep Membership Rewards points - the Blue Business Plus card.
- Delta and Hilton are solid transfer values and having Amex points gives you top-off flexibility if you are invested in either of those systems.
- We do find Amex travel a higher quality of service over the Chase travel portal.
How The Amex Business Green Credit Card Fits In The Amex Membership Rewards Ecosystem
If you are concerned about your 5/24 status and need a business card, American Express has better cards that offer more overall value than the Business Green.
The Amex Business Gold and Amex Business Platinum cards feature:
- Significantly higher sign-up bonuses (100,000 and 200,000 points, respectively)
- More valuable benefits and statement credits
- Annual fees of $375 for the Business Gold and $895 for the Business Platinum
The various benefits and credits from those cards will help offset the higher fees depending on your spending habits.
There are two other American Express business cards on offer:
- Blue Business Plus: Offers the same 15,000-point sign-up bonus as the Business Green but does not have an annual fee. This is a great card to hold long-term as it's the only Membership Reward-earning card that does not have an annual fee. If you can hold off until you see an elevated offer, you can gain great value from this card.
- Blue Business Cash: Provides a $250 statement credit as a welcome offer, and it charges no annual fee. It does not offer much else and is solely a cash back card.
