Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card Review

Key Takeaways

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card has a $95 annual fee, and if you stay at Marriott at least once per year, the annual free night award can justify keeping it. Marriott points carry lower value than many other hotel programs, and pricing is dynamic. The free night perk is capped at 35,000 points, though you can top it up with up to 25,000 additional Marriott points.

Why This Card Could Be Right For You

The welcome offer differs from most cards, providing three free nights after you spend $3,000. Each free night from the signup bonus can be worth up to 50,000 points, which is effectively a 150,000-point sign-up bonus. You can top up each award with up to 25,000 additional Marriott points. Even with Marriott’s lower point value, the bonus justifies the $95 annual fee in year one. The card also earns 3x on groceries, gas, and dining, plus 2x on other purchases, helping you build points quickly.

If you keep the card beyond that first year, there are several benefits to consider. Each account anniversary, you receive a free night award worth up to 35,000 points, also eligible for a 25,000-point top-up. You also get complimentary Silver Elite status, 15 Elite Night Credits annually, and one additional elite night for every $5,000 spent.

When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply

Here are some exceptions where the card might not be good for you:

  • You want a higher level of status, and Silver Elite doesn’t offer the perks you’re looking for
  • You plan to stay in places that rarely have 35k point hotels, making your “free” night less useful

What to Know About Marriott Bonvoy

Their poor points redemption value leaves Bonvoy near the bottom of our rankings.

  • There are multiple cards with great point transfer options. In theory, this is good.
  • Finding a solid value for a Marriott stay is a challenge. A one night stay at desirable destinations can match the number of points from one card bonus.
  • Values can be found, but they can be frustrating to find, so it isn’t a terrible system. It just doesn’t have the usefulness of many of the other hotel systems.

How The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card Fits In The Marriott Bonvoy Ecosystem

Marriott’s signup bonus rules are complex, made more confusing by both Chase and Amex issuing co-branded cards, so you need to account for each bank’s restrictions in addition to the Marriott specific rules. If you’re set on a Marriott card, keep these rules in mind as you choose.

The entry-level option is the Bonvoy Bold, which has no annual fee and a 30,000-point sign-up bonus. It offers few additional benefits, which is expected at this tier. The next step up includes the Bevy and Bountiful cards. Both carry $250 annual fees and require $15,000 of yearly spending to earn a “free” night (up to 50,000 points), which is generally a poor trade-off. That level of spend is better used toward a new card bonus.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card is for the frequent Marriott traveler who is loyal to the brand. Despite its $650 annual fee, it includes Platinum Elite status, a free night worth up to 85,000 points, and various statement credits and benefits, which can justify the cost if you regularly stay with Marriott.
