Capital One Venture X Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
The Venture X is a “keep forever” card if you travel even once or twice per year. Its $395 annual fee is lower than other premium cards, and easy to offset with the $300 Capital One Travel credit and 10,000-point anniversary bonus. Add lounge access, travel protections, and no coupons to track, and it stands out in the premium space.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
Venture X offers premium benefits at a lower cost. You also get the flexibility of being able to cancel out any travel purchase with points using Capital One’s “Cover Your Purchases” function.
- Earn 75,000 Capital One miles after spending $4,000 in 3 months
- $395 annual fee, which is significantly lower than premium cards from other banks
- $300 annual travel credit (must be used through Capital One Travel)
- Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
- Lounge access via Priority Pass + Capital One Lounges (beginning February 1, 2026, authorized users will have to pay a $125 annual fee to gain lounge access and the cardholder can no longer bring guests for free).
- 10,000 bonus miles each year on your account anniversary
- $100 credit with Premier Collection + $50 credit with Lifestyle Collection
- Excellent travel protections, car rental insurance, and trip delay/cancellation benefits
You can "Cover Your Purchases" by redeeming miles at 1:1 value for any travel purchase, including Airbnb, VRBO, boutique hotels, and more. It's a nice benefit to use for travel purchases you can't otherwise use points for.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
This card might not be ideal if:
- You don’t like booking travel through portals (you must use Capital One Travel to trigger the $300 credit)
- You’re trying to book with a specific airline or hotel that isn’t available through Capital One’s travel partners
What to Know About Capital One Miles
Capital One is a flexible point system we use for travel items that other systems don't cover
- Partner transfers are niche airlines and hotel brands, making the points more difficult to maximize
- Using an award search tool such as PointsYeah makes finding flights with those airlines more realistic
- Simple redemptions for erasing travel can be useful for cruises & rental cars (at 1¢/point so value isn’t maximized)
- Capital One is particularly attractive to businesses with large spending
How The Capital One Venture X Credit Card Fits In The Capital One Miles Ecosystem
The Venture X is Capital One’s premium card, but it sits within a broader lineup that requires some planning. Capital One is one of the strictest issuers, with rules like the 1/6 Rule and the Venture Family Rule, so application order matters.
The Venture Family Rule means you should start with the lower-tier cards before applying for the Venture X if you want to be eligible for all welcome offers:
- VentureOne: 20,000 point bonus after $500 in purchases. No annual fee, but limited perks. Best used as a downgrade option rather than a starting point.
- Venture Rewards: 75,000 point bonus after spending $4,000 with a $95 annual fee. Earns 2x on all purchases and offers strong value relative to its cost.
If you apply for the Venture X first, you will likely be ineligible for the welcome offers on these cards later. For most users, starting with Venture Rewards (and optionally VentureOne) before upgrading to Venture X is the optimal strategy.
My Experience, No Filter
We picked up the Venture X after maxing out Chase opportunities. The lounge access was a major win on a family trip to Croatia, especially since we could add my wife as a free authorized user and get access for all five of us (Note that this benefit is discontinued as of February 1, 2026. Authorized users now have to pay a $125 annual fee). We’ve used the travel credit on local weekend getaways, and the purchase eraser came in handy for a vacation rental in the Canadian Rockies. Combined with Chase for hotels and Amex for flights, Venture X helped complete the puzzle and has saved us thousands.
