IHG One Rewards Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
The IHG One Rewards Credit Card offers a 80,000 (current special 125,000)-point welcome bonus, automatic Silver Elite status, and 5 Elite Night Credits each year, which are all solid perks for a no-annual-fee card. Starting in 2027, you'll have to spend $5,000 on the card annually to unlock the fourth-night-free benefit. However, IHG offers two other personal cards, both with stronger benefits for travelers willing to pay an annual fee. Because of the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule, opening this card prevents you from earning a welcome bonus on either of those cards for 24 months, so it's important to consider which IHG card offers the best long-term value for you before applying.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
If you're new to the points hobby or don’t yet have a hotel-specific card, the IHG One Rewards Credit Card may look appealing. It offers a 80,000 (current special 125,000)-point bonus after $2,000 (currently $2,000) in purchases within the first 3 months, plus a fourth night free on award stays of four or more consecutive nights (for the rest of 2026; starting in 2027 you'll have to spend $5,000 on the card annually to get 4th night free). There is also no annual fee on this card.
You’ll also receive automatic Silver Elite status, which includes a 20% points bonus on stays, non-expiring points, and a 2 p.m. late checkout. Cardmembers also receive 5 Elite Night Credits each calendar year, helping you make progress toward higher status and IHG Milestone Rewards.
Cardmembers currently earn:
- 3x points at restaurants
- 3x points at grocery stores
- 3x points at gas stations
- 3x points on utilities, internet, cable, phone, and select streaming services through December 31, 2026
- 2x points on all other purchases
At most IHG properties, you can earn up to 17x points:
- 5x points from the card
- 10x points as an IHG One Rewards member
- 2x points from Silver Elite status
Beginning January 1, 2027, two important benefits change. Utilities, internet, cable, phone, and select streaming services will drop from 3x to 2x points. You'll also need to spend $5,000 on the card in a calendar year to unlock the fourth-night-free benefit for the remainder of that year and the following calendar year.
Before applying, make sure you understand the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule. You can only hold one personal IHG card at a time, and earning a bonus on this card prevents you from earning a bonus on another personal IHG card for 24 months. With two higher-tier personal IHG cards now available, make sure this is the IHG card you want before using your eligibility on its welcome bonus.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
Consider skipping this card if:
- You stay at IHG properties regularly and can get enough value from the additional benefits on the Premier or Premier Select cards to justify their annual fees
- You don’t like or stay at IHG properties, in which case a different hotel card (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton) may be a better fit.
What to Know About IHG One Rewards
IHG is our “utility” hotel points system. If you just need a night or two, and aren’t looking for glitz and glamor, IHG points go a long way.
- The IHG brand consists mostly of Holiday Inns, which are in nearly every small town or international city you might want to stay. We use it as the Hyatt’s “not there” filler.
- There are also several luxury hotels part of IHG’s umbrella, and while redemptions can be high, there is plenty of variety in IHG properties
- The generous sign-up bonuses (especially if you wait for a special offer) will cover 6-8 nights per card.
- IHG is part of the Chase partner rewards system, but IHG redemptions can be very high, so this isn't usually a great transfer option except for topping off.
How The IHG One Rewards Credit Card Fits In The IHG One Rewards Ecosystem
The IHG One Rewards Credit Card is the no-annual-fee option in IHG's personal card lineup. It can make sense if you want to earn IHG points without paying an annual fee, but its long-term value is more limited than the Premier cards now that earning its annual free night requires $5,000 in calendar-year spending.
- Want the strongest value for occasional IHG stays? The IHG One Rewards Premier Card offers a 140,000-point welcome offer after $3,000 in spending within 3 months. Its anniversary free night does not require annual spending and can go a long way toward offsetting the $150 annual fee.
- Stay with IHG several times per year? The IHG One Rewards Premier Select Card offers a {%bonus_points-[ID]%}-point welcome offer after {%min_spend-[ID]%} in spending within 3 months, plus a 60,000-point anniversary free night, Platinum Elite status, 20 Elite Night Credits each year, and additional credits and spend-based benefits.
- Eligible for a business card? The IHG One Rewards Premier Business Card offers a {%bonus_points-[BIZ ID]%}-point welcome offer after {%min_spend-[BIZ ID]%} in spending within 3 months. It offers benefits comparable to the personal Premier while not adding to your 5/24 count.
Because of the IHG Personal 1/24 Rule, it is worth comparing the welcome offers and long-term benefits of all three personal cards before applying.
My Experience, No Filter
Personally, we’d always recommend starting with the Premier card for the free night and better sign-up bonus, but if you’re just dipping your toe into collecting hotel points, the Traveler card is an easy win with no annual fee. At some point, you'll want both these cards in your portfolio. Beyond that, IHG properties have been a boon when other hotel chains weren’t available. We've used them for quick overnight small-town stays (Hello, Madison, Ohio!) to budget-friendly international options (Rome, Italy),and having IHG points on hand has saved us hundreds of dollars on last-minute bookings.
