Capital One VentureOne Credit Card Review
Key Takeaways
If you plan to stay in the points and miles hobby long term, the VentureOne is probably not worth using one of your 5/24 slots. Its 20,000 mile bonus and limited benefits fall well short of what the Venture and Venture X cards offer. If you’re considering a Capital One card, it usually makes more sense to choose one with stronger rewards, travel perks, and long-term earning potential.
Why This Card Could Be Right For You
It’s difficult to justify choosing the VentureOne card when Capital One’s higher-tier cards offer significantly stronger welcome offers, rewards, and benefits. Still, if you’re extremely fee-averse and just testing the waters with points and miles:
- Earn 20,000 Capital One miles after $500 in purchases within the first 3 months
- 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
- 1.25x miles on all other purchases
- No annual fee
Capital One has offered elevated bonuses on this card in the past, but we still don’t think it’s worth a 5/24 slot for most people. The Venture Family Rule does mean that opening the Venture Rewards or Venture X first can make you ineligible for the VentureOne bonus. Even so, both cards are significantly better long-term options, so most users should simply skip the VentureOne altogether.
When The Usual Advice Doesn't Apply
This card may not be a good fit if:
- You’re looking for strong benefits and travel perks—there simply aren’t any here
- You want to maximize value from your 5/24 slots (and you should) — this card doesn’t deliver the long-term value that others do
- You’d prefer better-earning multipliers and a more worthwhile sign-up bonus, even with an annual fee
What to Know About Capital One Miles
Capital One is a flexible point system we use for travel items that other systems don't cover
- Partner transfers are niche airlines and hotel brands, making the points more difficult to maximize
- Using an award search tool such as PointsYeah makes finding flights with those airlines more realistic
- Simple redemptions for erasing travel can be useful for cruises & rental cars (at 1¢/point so value isn’t maximized)
- Capital One is particularly attractive to businesses with large spending
How The Capital One VentureOne Credit Card Fits In The Capital One Miles Ecosystem
The VentureOne is Capital One’s entry-level travel card, but it offers far fewer long-term benefits than the other two personal cards in the Venture family.
The mid-tier Venture Rewards card has a $95 annual fee and includes:
- 75,000 mile bonus after $4,000 in purchases within 3 months
- Unlimited 2x miles on all purchases
- 5x miles on hotels, rental cars, and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
- Access to 14 airline and 2 hotel transfer partners
- Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
The premium option is the Venture X, which carries a higher $395 annual fee but offers stronger perks:
- 75,000 mile bonus after $4,000 in purchases within 3 months
- $300 annual Capital One Travel credit
- 10,000 anniversary miles each year
- Unlimited 2x miles on all purchases
- 5x miles on hotels, rental cars, and vacation rentals through Capital One Travel
- Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
- Priority Pass and Capital One Lounge access
- Strong travel protections and rental car coverage
All three Venture cards have access to Capital One’s airline and hotel transfer partners, which offers the best chance to get outsized value with your points. Capital One cards also offer the “Cover Your Purchases” feature, which lets you erase nearly any travel purchase, including Airbnb and VRBO stays, at a 1:1 ratio. If you’re new to points and miles, don’t let annual fees scare you away. Cards with annual fees often deliver far more long-term value than entry-level options like the VentureOne.
My Experience, No Filter
I got this card almost entirely for an at-the-time inflated sign-up bonus. I do love the ease of spending the points on canceling a travel expense via the "Points Eraser" benefit. But, again, I really fell in love with the Venture X card —much better for people fixated on traveling.
