Avoid These Pitfalls

Key Takeaways

LATAM Pass is best for travel to and from South America.

  • LATAM has solid coverage throughout South America and much of Latin America.
  • You can often find good deals from the U.S. to South America.
  • Lack of transfer partners makes earning miles harder, with no major credit card transfer options and only two weak co-branded cards.
  • Award prices fluctuate wildly, and partner awards don’t always align with the published award chart.

How to Earn Miles

The best ways to earn LATAM Pass miles are to fly on the airline or one of its partners and to open a co-branded credit card. Unfortunately, no major credit card rewards systems transfer to LATAM. You can transfer from a couple of hotel loyalty programs, but the transfer rates are not great.

Earn by Flying LATAM

The easiest way to earn LATAM Pass miles is to fly on LATAM. You’ll earn miles based on the cost of your flight and your status with the airline.

For domestic and regional flights, you’ll earn a multiplier on the base fare based on your status (excluding taxes, fees, and additional services):

  • Basic: 3x
  • Gold: 4x
  • Gold Plus: 5x
  • Platinum: 7x
  • Black: 8x
  • Black Signature: 9x

For international flights, the earning rates increase:

  • Basic: 5x
  • Gold: 6x
  • Gold Plus: 7x
  • Platinum: 9x
  • Black: 10x
  • Black Signature: 11x

Earn by opening co-branded credit cards

LATAM offers two co-branded credit cards. Neither is a top pick for most travelers, but if you're planning a trip to South America and LATAM has better options than Avianca, it might be worth considering the LATAM Airlines World Elite Mastercard.

Just be sure you’re well under 5/24 before using a valuable slot on this card.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

LATAM is no longer part of an alliance. They left oneworld in 2020 after forming a partnership with Delta and dealing with financial challenges during Covid.

LATAM still partners with many airlines, and you can earn LATAM Pass miles when flying with any of them. Earnings are based on your booking class, and LATAM provides a chart for each partner.

To see how many miles you’ll earn, go here and click on each partner airline to view the earning table tied to your fare class.

Other Options to Earn

You can earn 3 miles and 6 qualifying points per dollar spent when you rent a car through LATAM’s travel portal. You can also earn miles when you book travel through Booking.com.

How to Redeem Miles

The best way to redeem LATAM Pass miles is for airfare on LATAM or one of its partner airlines. LATAM does not offer redemptions for hotels, car rentals, or other travel expenses, so flights are your only strong option.

LATAM does not publish an award chart for its own flights. Award prices appear tied to the cash fare and are priced dynamically. Most redemptions return about 1.2 cents per point, which is decent but not great. Because pricing is so consistent, it’s hard to find true sweet spots like you can with programs that use award charts or more predictable dynamic pricing.

LATAM also no longer publishes a partner award chart. They previously offered one, but the pricing rarely matched what you’d actually see. Partner award pricing now appears dynamic as well, but it’s unclear exactly how it is calculated. The only partner award space that shows up online is with Delta. For all other partner flights, you must call to book.

To search for award flights, go to LATAM’s home page, log in, and enter your flight details. Click “Use Miles+Cash” to view award options. Results are displayed by week.

Booking Tips

It seems as though you can only book LATAM or Delta flights online with awards. No other partners show up when searching. If you want to redeem for another partner, you’ll have to call to do so

Who is it best for?

Since LATAM doesn’t partner with any credit card reward systems and only has two lackluster co-branded cards, it isn’t a system we recommend getting into. The main reason to pay attention to it is if you fly to or from South America regularly. Even then, Avianca is usually the better program to join and prioritize. You may find value in using both LATAM and Avianca if you travel to South America often, but Avianca offers more options for earning and redeeming points with its broader partner network.

LATAM’s coverage throughout Latin America is excellent. The ability to earn LATAM Pass miles is not, and redemption options aren’t strong either. LATAM does not use an award chart, and most award flights are closely tied to cash prices. It’s rare to find better than a 1.0–1.4 cent per point redemption, and booking partner awards online is mostly nonexistent, with Delta being the main exception.

Status Levels Explained

There are five levels of elite status within LATAM Pass, including LATAM Member, which you receive when you sign up for a free account. For all other levels, you must earn a certain number of Qualifying Points. You earn Qualifying Points based on how much you spend on flights with LATAM or its partners.

Note that prior to 2025, there was a Gold Plus tier, which has since been discontinued. If you earned Gold Plus qualifications in 2024, you will retain Gold Plus status benefits until March 31, 2026.

Elite Status Levels

Here are the four other levels, requirements you’ll need to get to each level, and the benefits of each

  • Courtesy upgrade with segments
  • Seat selection
  • Premium access in all your flights
  • Premium boarding
  • Priority baggage on international flights
  • Preferential service from contact center
  • Maternity leave

Loyalty Point Rewards

In addition to earning elite status levels, you can also earn other extra benefits by reaching certain levels of Qualifying Points. At each of the following levels, you can choose a benefit.

  • Earn 700 extra LATAM Pass miles on your next flight within South America
  • Earn 2000 extra LLATAM Pass miles on your next flight outside South America
  • Earn 350 extra qualifying points on your next flight within South America
  • Earn 1000 extra qualifying points on your next flight outside South America
  • One voucher for a free standard seat selection on a flight of your choice
  • Earn LATAM Pass miles and qualifying points for the purchase of your flight add-ons

What to Know Before Canceling

If you have one of the co-branded cards and plan to cancel it, know that points expire 36 months after earning them. If you earn points from a flight on LATAM, that will reset your clock. But transferring points from a program like Marriott Bonvoy will not.

FAQs

How do you earn points on LATAM Pass?
You can earn LATAM Pass miles by flying on LATAM or opening one of its co-branded credit cards. Only the LATAM World Elite Mastercard is generally worth considering. Since no major credit card rewards programs transfer to LATAM, earning miles can be slow and limited.
Who can use the LATAM lounge?
LATAM lounges are available to passengers flying in premium economy or premium business on LATAM or its partners. Travelers with Black or Black Signature status, or those with equivalent Delta or Qantas status, also have access when flying on LATAM-operated flights.
Can I transfer LATAM miles to Delta?
You cannot transfer LATAM Pass miles to Delta. Because LATAM and Delta are partners, you can redeem LATAM miles for award flights on Delta, and you can also book LATAM flights through Delta using SkyMiles. Transfers between the programs are not allowed.
How to keep LATAM miles from expiring?
Earning miles from an eligible LATAM flight extends your balance for another three years. If you hold status, even at the Gold tier, your miles will not expire. Once you lose elite status, miles become eligible to expire again 36 months after your status ends.
